Still debating and ran some of the numbers for cost of attending and pitt ended being 2,000 more per year than the other two. I really like the school but idk if its worth the extra 8, 000 over four years

That understanding is false. Anyone can apply to med school. You don’t need any committee. Such is the case for any med school applicant from any school.

I think you are correct, however, if you choose not to go through the committee it may imply your application is not competitive - again, if I’m reading the info correctly

“The Pre-professional Health Committee (PHC) is a group of faculty from the University of Pittsburgh that will evaluate your credentials for medical school (with the exception of your MCAT scores) in the same way that they will be evaluated by a medical school admissions committee; the PHC then writes a composite evaluation (sometimes referred to as a Committee letter) that you can have Career Services send to medical schools in support of your application. Medical schools prefer (and some require) that you have a composite evaluation as a part of your application, so its important to participate in this process. You should apply for evaluation by the PHC in your application year.”

Re the rankings mentioned above, according to the website students are ranked into groups such as “outstanding”,“very good”, “good”, “fair”, “poor” etc. and can get an idea of what that ranking is likely to be by speaking with an advisor. If they will not rank well they may be advised to bypass the committee and apply directly to med schools.

Correction - I got the ranking categories wrong

"After the PHC has evaluated your application materials, it will create a composite letter for you. The PHC ranks you as a candidate for medical school, using the following scale:

Outstanding
Strong
Competitive
With Reservation
Well Below Average"

Correct. If you apply to med school from Pitt as an undergrad you essentially HAVE to have the committee read your application & recommend it. Not doing so implies that the committee would not recommend you and that you are a poor student.

Source: My roommate last year applied to med school, as did many other friends.

I was wrong which comes from me working mostly with post-baccs. Most med schools either require or prefer the committee letters when an applicant comes straight from undergrad.
