Pitzer students claim "cultural appropriation" of hoop earrings

I know, right? When are white people ever going to get a fair shake?

Agree that there is no place for death threats. Totally inappropriate.
But I would like to lodge a protest- bagels have been culturally misappropriated. Just putting that out there.

I am a white woman who grew up in the 70’s. During the Son of Sam days, I wore big hoop earrings because my hair was completely pulled back and under a bandanna and I needed to not look washed out. Then again, a white girl could be considered to have culturally appropriated bandannas, which only bikers wore in those days. Of course, I did live in a housing project in the South Bronx so I guess I had some rights to it. I am not sure that I can really get away with sharing my true thoughts on the concept of cultural appropriation…

I agree, tacos have also been culturally misappropriated, I see white people eating them everywhere. You all can keep the burrito, that was an American invention. Don’t even get me started on the chalupa…

Look, we all understand cultural misappropriation when we see it. There are certain styles that are clearly associated with particular cultures. Hoop earrings aren’t one on them.

I have absolutely ZERO sympathy for this BS. These women need to get over themselves. Really. Latina women did not invent hoop earrings, any more than black women invented braids.

I thought this was pretty dumb. And if you google “hoop earrings” nothing very outre comes up. But if google “ghetto hoop earings” I guess I see earrings that might be considered more of an ethnic/racial statement. Things like this:

That first broken link is to a picture of Beyonce with Jay-Z wearing big gold hoop earrings.

@marvin100 not asking for a fair shake. Just parity in the world of hate speech. It can go both ways. You needn’t have been oppressed to be hated…

That’s journalism.

The quotes from the women came from an email thread that went to the entire Pitzer student body. I don’t know if this was part of a forum which was only supposed to be kept within the Pitzer community, or if it was fair game.

As far as I can tell in reading about this, the painter is getting death threats, not any white girls.

And the outside hate speech is directed at the painter.

Cross posted, responding to #66

Which is totally unacceptable. And disproportionate even if it was acceptable…and the death threats are also probably hate crimes!

I have read the emails three times and just don’t see hateful rhetoric myself. They sound aggravated but not hateful or threatening to me.

I’d like to know if something particular inspired the painter’s message.

Add:
Just read it again. Not seeing any hate.

“Pitzer students claim “cultural appropriation” of hoop earrings”

Pitzer students seem to have too much free times on their hands to come up with this kind of rubbish. How about doing something that will make a real difference? Like rubbish removal along highways or trail maintenance in state parks?! Really… this whining gets quite old.

About the “death threats”. They’re stupid … but they’re also part of having any notoriety on the internet these days. I had one from a nutjob thousands of miles away (people can track you down via public records on the internet, that’s why we no longer answer phone calls from unknown numbers, we let them go to the recorder that uses the standard ATT voice). He was even investigated by the FBI. It’s kind of a “welcome to the club” moment. It’s not right but it comes with the territory.

Almost all college students have a lot of free time–that’s why colleges feature so many parties. Is this news to you?

The ones who party are too wasted for this kind of crap.

Double post

It’s my impression women are at greater risk on the internet for death threats, rape threats, etc. than men.

67. - I'm reading students saying the email went out to a student list serve that should have been private. I imagine we all teach our own that privacy doesn't exist in such a case.

Haha it’s possible to do a lot of dumb crap when you’re wasted. Don’t ask me how I know…

98 u[iojI wore David Yurman knockoff hoop earrings yesterday. Wearing knockoffs is a different kind of appropriation

Well, personally, I think of all the wonderful things that have evolved from cultural appropriation.

Perhaps a silly example, but tap dancing is generally thought to have begun with a melding of African slave dances and Irish step dancing in post Civil War shanty towns. I love jazz and, while it certainly began with African-Americans, it has been enriched by other musical traditions, IMO. There are also offshoots like Bossa Nova and Samba.

Among the cuisines of the world, one of my favorites is Vietnamese, which is heavily influence by both French and Chinese. For fast food, one of my favorite options is Korean tacos. (Korean burritos are popular too.)

Isn’t that what the US is supposed to be about…a melting pot?
