In spring of your freshman year or later, you can rush. There is a short application you have to submit to the Greek Life office to “put your name in the hat,” so to speak, for rush.

Then, during the rush period, the fraternities have different social events so you can meet the brothers and they can meet you, evaluating your personality and how you interact with the brothers. The brothers will then meet and talk about the rushees and which ones they wish to give bids. On bid night, the brothers go around and invite the individuals to join their fraternity. If you accept the bid, there is then a pledge process before you’re a full-fledged member.

By no means do you have to be Greek. Regarding Greek parties, they are usually advertised around campus on fliers. I’ve heard that sometimes it’s a little harder for males to get into Greek parties their second semester if they don’t rush, but I don’t think it’s really that big of a deal, especially if you have friends in the fraternity. If you go Greek or not, you should have plenty of opportunities to make friends.
