Good Morning!
It seems this thread has run its course, but I had to post the final piece to this puzzle. My D received her “no” letter for the DHS yesterday! We had email her counselor earlier, so we knew she wasn’t a contender. It seems that several of her friends received admission letter as well yesterday. (all rejected) Maybe they mailed all of these in one mass mailing. Who knows, but at least Tulane finally followed up on the mailings. We will focus on merit scholarship and April Honors weekend and move forward from now on!

Thanks for that rachmom. No doubt Tulane should be more timely with the “no” letters, that is too long after the yesses. But it is good that they finally made it official and did the polite (and right) thing.

Just out of curiosity, are you surprised at any of the admission rejections of her friends? I don’t have much data yet, but it appears that Tulane is rejecting kids that clearly would have gotten in past years. That tells me they are seeing a high(er) yield of great students. But as I said, not really enough data to form a firm conclusion in that regard.

And in the realm of being very nosy, where else is she considering?

Agree, that timeliness in responding should be a higher priority. Not good for people to have a bad taste in their mouth about the school. They should be clearer with timeframes, and be better at working within them.

Rachmom- is TU still in the running?

No, she was not surprised that her friends had not been accepted. (of course, she felt bad for them because they felt bad) Tulane was a long shot. Remember, we live in LA so they were guaranteed admission if they met the minimum requirements, which they didn’t, so that tells you a little about their stats.

She applied and has been accepted with scholarship to LSU (2nd choice) and applied to Duke, Georgetown and Vanderbilt. Even if she’s admitted, without comparable scholarships as Tulane, they won’t be in the picture. She’s actually very happy going to Tulane and since we live so close, we are happy too!

just a thought, in this world of forums and facebook etc , some of these universities seem to have forgotten or do not realize that word is out on these awards, admits etc as early as it is and are still operating in the “old world” . alot of people who dont frequent these boards or official acceptance pages of facebook have no idea that they should have received things and sit impatiently waiting but not necessarily with a “bad taste”… it is those of us that are in the “know”, that really have a hard time.

Good point parent56. Tulane Jeff, who posts occasionally and I assume reads CC on a somewhat regular basis, is in the admissions office, so presumably there is an awareness of these issues. And clearly they are trying to do a better job. This year was a good first step, hopefully by next year they can have it “automated” enough that once they make the decision they can immediately generate the proper response and get things out more quickly. After all, why risk losing any number of Presidential and Distinguished Scholar winners over something as simple as a polite letter of regret? While the student on the other thread that complained about this was way over the top about it (IMO), even 10% of that intensity of reaction could make the difference between someone attending Miami, Vandy, BC, USC, etc. etc. instead of Tulane, even with less scholarship money at the others.

BTW, for those who speculate that the project makes no difference, my D met with a department head (to get her major declaration form signed) who apparently was involved in the DHS selections last year. She vividly remembered my D’s project, and I could hear the intense pride about it in my D’s voice. So yes, it is clear based on that and numerous other statements made by the Deans and others involved that the projects do make quite a difference to make that final differentiation between students that are so tightly packed together in their outstanding achievements in high school.

I agree. We are not “bitter” about it however. We just emailed the counselor after a respectable amount of time and our question about the DHS was promptly answered. My D found that it was however, the topic of discussion in her school among gilrs who like herself had been accepted with scholarships and who had a reasonable shot at the DHS. Some had received a 'no" letter and some had not. So even without CC, facebook, twitter, etc word of mouth still adds to the anxiety. Personally, I have found this site very helpful in this whole process. So many of you speak from experience and that speaks volumes!

ditto to all that you said. We too contacted the admissions counselor to find out why a letter had not been sent. She said she would look into it.

I mentioned earlier that my D had friends that didn’t get in due to low stats. Actually, one had the minimum stats for guaranteed admission in LA (ACT 28, GPA 3.5, etc) However, you had to have applied by Nov. 1. He applied in Jan. Oh well, not sure if it would’ve worked for him anyway. Just wanted to be correct!

For those that attended Honor’s Weekend, how was it?

Honors weekend starts tomorrow :)

Oops sorry! Have a good time then!

Hi everybody. I’m very happy today because I’ve received the DHS notification letter! It’s been so long since the supposed date of notification that I’ve assumed I had no chance at winning! The point for me to write this reply is to remind everybody that your notification letter may be just on its way, especially for international DHS applicants. Good luck!

Does the DHS cover expenses other than tuition, namely room & board, transportation, etc.?

Hi allan - That’s wonderful, congratulations. I can see where getting the package into China might have taken a bit longer.

The DHS is tuition “only”. You are still responsible for room & board, transportation (not a small matter in your case I guess!), books and fees. Be aware that in Tulane’s case the non-tuition fees are about $3,500 a year. See the following table: http://pandora.tcs.tulane.edu/acctrec/pdfs/UGBudget_10-11.pdf So in total you are looking at a bit over $52,000 a year without transportation costs. The first line on that table, $38,300 is covered for you, leaving you with about $14,000 per year plus transportation that you must pay.

Thanks fallenchemist. You always come to our aid. I’m already extremely obliged by Tulane’s generous offer, and I can live with the fact that it covers only tuition LOL. The rest of the expenses is much less than our expected family contribution. I’m very happy, but still waiting for the bulk of my admission decisions which will come by early April. Until then I won’t decide to enroll in Tulane. Do you think it would be inappropriate of me to eventually decide Tulane given its ofter?

I think you meant by that last sentence would it be inappropriate of you to eventually decide against Tulane given its offer. The answer is no, it is not inappropriate. You need to decide where you want to go based on factors unique to yourself. Money is just one factor, although for most people a critical one. But certainly if your family is wealthy or at least comfortable to the point where approximately $160,000 over 4 years is not a major drain on them, then you can put money as a consideration aside and focus on the difference between Tulane and the other schools you eventually get into. I noticed you are looking at a couple of LAC’s, at least. And a couple of the best ones at that. Clearly there are differences in these schools and Tulane in terms of size, research, and some other factors. So they present some clear choices and if you feel their environment fits you better than Tulane, then that is what you should do (again, putting money aside). Tulane made you a great, generous offer, but you earned it also. It in no way should make you feel obligated that you have to choose Tulane. I hope you do, you would obviously be a tremendous asset to the incoming class and the school. Besides, my D is a China Studies major and I am sure you could tell her a lot! LOL. But you need to do what is best for you.

Yes yes you answered exactly what I asked, and sorry for my typo. Best of luck with your work and your daughter’s studies! Just out of curiosity, how did you find out I’m considering some LACs?

I am psychic!! LOL, no, I just saw that you had posted on the Amherst board and are still waiting for them to decide, and I think I saw you said something about liking Vassar also. Wonderful schools.
