Pls help! WashU vs Rice

That’s definitely a really good point- no matter where I’ll go I will end up associating it with my college experience! I’m just a sucker for cool buildings lol

Thank you!

Thank you for your advice! I’ve spoken to many students at both schools and I’ve encountered a funny problem: all of them are so happy. However, after speaking to many students I do think I would fit in ever so slightly better at Rice, especially because it’s a smaller environment.

Thank you so much for sharing your perspective! It’s definitely nice to hear that many grads leave the south (since I may want to move back to the northeast to be closer to family). Also I when I spoke to students I thought that it was 3 years of housing guaranteed, so if this is not the case do you feel that the majority of students are able to stay on campus for at least 3 years if they want to?

Thank you for sharing your perspective! It’s definitely a relief to hear that there is a fairly strong LGBTQ+ presence on campus. I saw a Rice dorm back when I visited and I got to see a WashU dorm recently and to be quite honest I didn’t get what all the hype was about. Since I didn’t perceive such a glaring difference between the two school dorms I think the quality of dorms is a bit less of a factor for me now. As long as they have AC (especially in Houston) I‘ll manage lol!

I just got the impression that Rice was less well known in the northeast since there were many instances where people had not heard of the school (a girl once asked me “like the food?” lol). But after looking into it further and digging more into the career/grad school outcomes I agree that in professional/academic circles Rice is definitely well known— which is really what matters most!

That’s definitely a relief to hear— definitely alleviates some concerns I have about fitting in.

Have you visited WashUStL ?

The summer before my daughter started at Rice we went to NYC. One day she wore her owl shirt, and a young man came up to us smiling. He said that he was a recent Rice graduate and asked if my daughter was a Rice student. she said incoming. Then the young man started describing his happy Rice experiences for a good five minutes.
Fast forward three years, my daughter interned in DC for two months. During her time there, she was approached several times by colleagues, friends of colleagues, and strangers who were Rice alumni to offer help if she needed anything. After signing the lease in an apartment building, she ran into several Rice alumni who lived in another apartment building within the block, and was introduced to the new owl community.
My daughter said the four years at Rice was the best experience in her life. I’m grateful that Rice provided the environment for her to grow from an indecisive girl to an assertive young women. Based on my daughter, almost everything was student-run (Oweek, coffee shop, radio station, dorm room draw, magister candidate interview, etc.). The adults gave much more guidance than direction, let the kids figure things out and learn from mistakes. It worked perfectly for my daughter.

Definitely. Each residential college has their own housing rules and they are all set up so that students stay on for 3 years at least. But, it’s not “guaranteed”. I don’t know anyone who did not stay on for 3 - 4 years who wanted to.

I can 1000% guarantee that every building at Rice will have AC.

There are some prisons in Texas that don’t have AC, but I think that’s about it.

My daughter just finished her first year there, and she also told me it was one of her best years if not the best year of her life. I hesitate to post because it’s one person’s opinion but she was so grateful she was able to experience it.
As for students running

Yep! Very gorgeous campus and nice students but for whatever reason just felt like Rice was the vibe for me.

Got it, thanks!

Rice may be - but if you’ve not yet visited WUSTL, you don’t really know about Vibe.

When is your visit?

I believe the “yep” meant they had in fact visited.
