Polar Vortex - Are You Freezing Yet?

Notre Dame has already closed from tomorrow night until Thursday afternoon. Don’t remember that happening before.

A week ago, my new-to-me 120 year old house had frozen pipes to the only currently working bathroom. Hoping not to repeat that…

I hate having livestock in this weather and worry about tank heaters losing electricity and hydrants freezing.

^^I’m very relieved about them closing. Here it’s supposed to be about 0 with windchills up to negative 20. I can manage, but I worry about my old dog.

@rosered55, I sincerely hope nobody is cruel enough to leave a dog out in that weather. If I heard one barking I’d give it about a minute and then consider calling animal control. Maybe the local humane society?

Chicago is actually warm now like 33 degrees. My wife is in Hawaii sending me back beautiful pictures. I send her 6 inches of snow pictures. Dog is bored but went out a few times today and more coming. Going to run him tonight. I have to walk him in the morning and won’t be back till like 6:00 pm. He is actually good. If I keep all the rooms dark he will just sleep most of the day. We play “dog mood music” that you can find on you tube. It’s basically nice orchestra type music and he falls asleep… I do as well but keeps him calm. I play it on the tvs around the house. Hide a few treats here and there also.

Not sure what I am going to do on Wednesday with like - 40 below… Gonna have to be fast in and out I guess.

Today isn’t bad- 23 out but Wednesday…high of negative 17 and a low of negative 31. I don’t even want to know what the windchill will be. My dog doesn’t dawdle to much when the weather is like that.

My college kid just sent me a video of someone on skis crossing campus. I thought it was hilarious. No word on classes being canceled. I’m in CA, so weather is good.

@Mwfan1921 It looks like -23 for Wednesday night in Chicagoland, and it doesn’t seem that it will be warmer than -13 during the day on Wednesday. The Weather Service has issued a warning that wind chills over that period could get as low as -55 degrees Fahrenheit.

It looks like it’s going to be substantially warmer inside my freezer than outdoors this Wednesday…

Because it took a bit of time to clear the snow, my kid’s high school had a late start day today. I expect that the school will either be closed, or will allow kids to take an excused absence, no questions asked, on Wednesday.

I’m already seeing events and even restaurants close for Wednesday - I’m a bit surprised on the restaurant closings! I wouldn’t be surprised to see our univ close as well - not sure if I hoping for that…I’d rather come to work than have it be so dangerously cold!

@rosered55 this discussion about dogs outside in the cold was happening in our community and our FB page last week. After a pet tragedy here the city gave the recommendation to call the non-emergency police number for pets being left outside.

Northern New England here. Our lows won’t get much colder than -5 so I think we’ll be spared the worst of it. Supplies laid in, propane tank full, three winters’ worth of cord wood stacked in the yard. My two dogs love the outdoors but I’ll certainly be limiting frequency and duration. Neither one has an indoor spot to eliminate if it gets really awful, but we were always matter-of-fact about accidents and I hope they’ll just use our ceramic tile if I put off taking them out too long. @romanigypsyeyes the weather is my fault here, too.

So daughter was very pleased to get invited to an interview that will be held this Wednesday and Thursday in Wisconsin.

For a little background, we live in a place that does have 4 seasons, but does not usually have very aggressive winters. We do typically get snow at least once a year, but our city shuts down and we all wait a few days until the snow melts and then we go back about our business.

Daughter goes to school in a slightly warmer climate than ours. Still 4 seasons, but even more temperate winters. She does own a winter jacket (not a coat – a jacket) but I’m fairly certain that she almost never wears it and is just a fan of throwing on a cardigan. Now, I would absolutely be wearing a coat in her city – but getting kid to wear a coat turns out to be one of the areas that I failed in long term.

She has absolutely no frame of reference for what the weather is going to be like while she is there. She has never even visited places in terribly cold times. Husband and I grew up in the Midwest but this may be colder than anything I have experienced. She swears to me that she is borrowing a real coat from a friend but she hasn’t even seen the coat yet.

Even better, she will be leaving out of the Atlanta airport. Atlanta will possibly be getting snow and will definitely be getting ice. It’s no secret that Atlanta is not great at handling these things. She will have to drive a decent distance to the airport and will have to leave for it before the sun rises. I don’t believe that she has ever driven on ice or snow. She will not have to drive at all at the destination which is good.

I welcome any advice that will be beneficial to help her or that will stop me from freaking out!

I read that in the temperatures we are going to experience you can actually experience frostbite with 10 minutes of skin exposure. Will that get her to bundle up? Seriously. It’s not a joking matter. She needs layers, a coat, head covering, warm footwear and gloves/mittens. Minimum.

Stay safe and warm, everyone!!!

@abasket

H works in hospitality & they are close to pulling the trigger on closing Weds.

The biz will probably spend more on labor that day than the biz takes in on sales. Also, if schools are closed, there will be unexpected childcare issues for some of the workers as well as the potential for employee cars not starting.

All of that to say, not worth it.

@MostlyDolores, a winter jacket or coat is vital, and with layers underneath it. For the travel from Atlanta, I recommend, if at all possible, that your daughter book a room at a hotel close to the airport for the night before the flight and then take a shuttle to the airport the next morning. My younger daughter, who does have winter-driving experience, did this at least once when she had to take a flight from Minnesota for an interview out of state.

Wind chills could hit -40 on Wednesday morning. Our local superintendent, who has absolutely no common sense or compassion, will probably tell everyone to put on a sweater.

This is the same superintendent who didn’t even delay one day last year when the roads were awful, and a senior died on his way to school. Platitudes about how tragic it was, yet nothing was changed in the way he called delays and closings.

My daughter is praying the buses can’t start.

:))

We live in the very very deep south & DS came home at lunch today and said WE might even get some snow tomorrow! Now that’s cold! So my whole-hearted sympathies go out to everyone up north!!

Upstate NY and I think Thursday may be in the low teens but other than that, not too bad., just regular winter weather. The cold doesn’t bother me at all since I bought the warmest long down coat on the planet a few years ago. I added a super duper warm knee length coat this year, so I’m really prepared now.

Also, going to Florida in two weeks which helps get through the winter. Before you know it, it’ll be March.

And may I add that the combination of cold weather after a thaw is just hideous? The snow has softened and smoothed out, and even walking in the wooded areas of our property is treacherous. I’ve put a set of pull-on spikes on my boots and left them there.

I hope the following advice is not necessary or relevant, but in my community, unfortunately, it is: don’t warm up your car if no one is in it. There have been many car thefts here in the past few years, committed mostly, it seems, by young people who drive around looking for cars left running in driveways and garages.

@MostlyDolores, @rosered55 advice is spot on. She needs mittens, a hat and a scarf. Even if she thinks she doesn’t, she does. The interviewer will be sympathetic but no skirt, pants and a layer underneath, especially if she’s not used to it. And boots, no flats, and not hunter boots. If she has a pair of uggs, bring them! I wear my uggs all winter long, things don’t melt here and my uggs are warm.

And good luck, she’ll know if she really wants this job and can tolerate Wisconsin winters.

My son spent a year in Wisconsin. He broke every rule of advice I just gave you. Kids! Then he spent a summer in Texas. He liked Wisconsin much better.

Our forecast is high of -1 without windchill on Wednesday. I’ll bevrunning to the grocery tomorrow for just a few things. These are the days i am glad I don’t have a job.
