Around here polygamy is accepted: legally and religiously. But it limits the number of spouces to 4 at one time. And religion requires the man to treat all women equally. which means they all get the exact same of everything. Their apartments have to cost the same and be the same space, they have to get the same amount of money, the man has to spand the same amount of time with every one of them…etc…the list is endless.
It was made acceptable in the first place becasue some couples could not concieve and one or the other really wanted babies so he got married to someone else.
But I have always wondered why women can’t have multiple husbands. In the past that wasn’t allowed becasue there was no way to know who the father of any children a woman had were. But now with the advancement of technology, it is quite simple to determine that with a simple DNA test. so maybe women should also have multiple husbands.

that was kind of long…sorry. :)

hahaha. i don’t know why but that statement made me laugh. why even put a limit if it’s accepted over there? anyway…

also, i highly doubt women will have multiple husbands. it’s just not socially accepted and i think thousands of years of sexism and men being the alpha male stereotype isn’t just gonna die b/c of dna technology. i guarantee you that it wasn’t b/c they wouldn’t know the proper father that women couldn’t have multiple husbads. that just makes no social sense.

women have always traditionally been subservient to men and i don’t think any culture, not even this one, would just approve of women having multiple husbands. you really think men (on avergage) wouldn’t mind sharing their woman. haha.

katho11, when the heck did I say that religion is not necessarily against it to prove my point? It’s merely part of my introduction and doesn’t serve to PROVE any point. On the SAT I Cr you would mark the bubble that says “serves to demonstrate that this is something that could be socially acceptable to most people as it doesn’t conflict with their religious values, but does not otherwise serve as proof.”

And in any case your post about cannabalism and etc is idiotic because religion, at least the ones I mentioned, DID forbid those things and DIDNOT forbid polygamy.

Furthermore, get off the topic of religion. I’m trying to figure out why polygamy is illegal in today’s supposedly secular American society – a society that supposedly determines its laws with preference to any religion.

How the hell can anyone support Polygamy? How many girls/women here would be happy being married (or forced into marriage) with some scary old man who has a bunch of other wives? All that stuff about how they “peacefully love eachother” is B.S., if you ask me.

Anyone who IS happy being involved in a polygamist relationshiop is obviously brainwashed or has some sort of mental disorder.

I think it should be legal for men to marry two women or more and women to marry two men or more. As long as it all consensual and no one is being forced into it, what gives anyone the right to disallow it?

Polygamy is legal here; men can marry up to four wives. I really, really dislike it though, because from what I’ve seen women really get (and excuse my vulgarity) screwed. Properly. A lot of men marry women secretly and their first wife knows nothing about it. Legal affairs. And women can’t say no when their husband decides to take on another wife – which I think is just utterly disgusting.

Cheers to the merging of religion (Islam, in this case) and law.

Personally, though, I find it very wrong. But one’s personal opinions on things shouldn’t interfere with individual rights.

It would probably turn into a huge legal mess. There are thousands of rights you get when you’re legally married to someone. Can you imagine what would happen if all of a sudden everyone could marry an unlimited number of people, for whatever reason? Some guy dies, and his 15 wives fight over who gets what from the estate. Some woman gets in a car accident and 4 of her husbands are down in front of the hospital receptionist arguing because only 2 people are allowed to visit her at once and they all want to be first. Stuff like that. Same reason why no one’s going to let you name 12 legal guardians for your kid. It would either turn into everyone gets married to everyone, or no one gets married to anyone, probably.

So you deny that the Aztec’s religion (as well as many others back in the day that accepted human sacrifice) counts just because you didn’t bring it up? I was merely using it to show how it has been religiously accepted in the past.

Besides, it wouldn’t be difficult to come up with an equally ridiculous argument to counter your polygamy logic from no longer accepted practices of the religions you do think count.

The Colorado City polygamists and various other groups throughout the US and Canada are cults. I’m sure 99% of the religious leaders from the three religions you referenced to would denounce its practice in a heartbeat.

The fact that polygamy is illegal has nothing to do with religious beliefs. One can only have one marriage in the United States because of all the benefits in areas such as taxes, inheritance, etc. If polygamy was allowed, a person could be married to 15 people simply in order to help give those people these benefits.

The issue is how do you define marriage. Some people define it as an agreement between a man and a women. Some people define it as a sacred bond between two people. To me marriage means monogamy. Whether that be between two men, two women or a man and a women. You are choosing to forsake all others to be with one person. If you do not want to only be with one person then why get married?

Katho said:
100% not true. No Muslim would deny the fact that polygamy is indeed allowed in Islam (one man, four wives). The prophet Mohammed had quite a few wives – much more than four. Not saying it’s right, just saying it’s right according to the religion.

I don’t know what’s in practice amongst Muslims, so I could very well be wrong about them, but I meant saying whether it should be practiced or not.

Mormons are notorious for polygamy, but ask any LDS goer and they’ll be quick to tell you it’s wrong.

Muslim scholars and religious leaders fully support the idea of polygamy.

My fault on that, then.

lol, sorry if I seemed a bit rude. I’m just very annoyed about the whole polygamy in Islam thing and how it’s so okay with a culture that I’m part of and how women’s rights just get trampled upon like it’s nothing.

/bitter

I didn’t think you were rude. If I’m blatantly wrong about something like that, I’d much rather someone point it out than be allowed to go around saying something totally wrong.
