I’m applying to McGill as, I guess, a reach.

I know that McGill basically only looks at two things: transcript and report card. But I also know that, in contrast to American schools, McGill is mainly concerned with your grades/scores in the areas related to your prospective degree.

I am interested in law/gov’t and English. I hate math, etc. and do not want to ever deal with it again.

I applied to the Faculty of the Arts; I can’t remember if I had to declare a major on my app but if I did it was probably either Political Science or English.

If I have three C’s on my transcript (math, chem, math again) but all A’s in my English and 800’s in SAT Critical Reading and Writing (and SAT II Lit 760 and History 800), how much of a chance do I have?

A friend of mine that applied had a lower SAT than mine (2010 to my 2190) but a much better GPA (an amazing 4.5 to my 4.1, weighted). She was waitlisted, though actually admitted off of the waitlist eventually.

i don’t know if it will be a big issue. I had for both 9th and 10th grade, and i had 4 c’s in tenth grade: both semesters of bio and both semesters of english.

Huge upward trend after though (11th grade= 12 As 4 bs, 12th=13 As 2 Bs), but still i don’t know how much it will hurt you. Best of luck. Is it your top choice?

I hope it’s possible; I have 4 C’s on my transcript (Chem, Geometry, Physics, US history… all of them were honors/AP) and am also much more english/humanities focused, despite my bad grade in APUSH (hard class, hard teacher, I learned many life lessons lol).

Don’t give up hope, I think it’s totally possible. If McGill is truly looking at the grades in the area of your future degree (which they claim to do), then you will likely be accepted.

Also, I looked at your chance thread and would like to say that we are applying to many of the same schools! I have a 4.2 weighted GPA and got into Tulane with their top scholarship ($24,000 a year); I’d say you have a very high chance of getting the same scholarship, or a slightly lesser one. They seem to be very generous. Good luck, and maybe I’ll see you next year at Concordia/McGill/Tulane/MarylandCP :)

Maybe I’ll see you somewhere, Wysteri, haha.
I was actually accepted to Tulane though I haven’t gotten the physical letter yet so I don’t know if they offered me any money.

McGill is looking more and more like my first choice simply because my other choices are looking less and less affordable, esp. in the current economic climate (though I do actually like McGill a lot in of itself).

jotc, in my honest opinion, i wouldn’t bank on it but i still definitely do think you have really good chances. even though SAT scores really aren’t all that important for Canadian schools, the fact that you’ve got some really strong ones can only more additionally to your advantage.

basically what it comes down to is how strong the rest of the applicant are applying at the same time as you. If they can full up their class entirely with students who only have A’s, then they will likely do that because they are so mark-driven. but realistically, we all know that is not the case so i definitely think things are looking bright for you! :)
