<p>If anyone wants me to give them feedback or edit their essay, I’d be glad to. I was accepted to UChicago RD (I’m taking a year off-going next fall) and I know how important the essay is. UChicago is an AMAZING school, so I’d be glad to help :)</p>
<p>I had an okay, personal idea for the mantis essay a few days ago when I was in the shower. Since I’ll already have common app done for normal deadline EA schools, I might throw UChicago in if I can write the prompt next week after other EA/nov subject tests are over.</p>
<p>@doremi, I feel your pain… that little clock freaks me out. Like why doesn’t the date change, why why why</p>
<p>I think after the EA deadline, we can start posting our essays for this year’s prompts. Because what idiot would try to use an essay that’s already been submitted the same year.</p>
<p>@cutiepie1 Hello! It’s very nice of you indeed! I think I’ll make my essays as good as I can, and then maybe send them to admitted students have a look at. :D</p>
<p>@International95 Yeah, i agree, the way it’s expressed is as important as the idea itself. i wish the AO will like both our essays, so that i can continue to go to math class in college with him and listen to his “geeky” ideas (haha, yeah, he wrote his essay in a further math class, while i was struggling with the math questions. the teacher let him because he’s too good to be bothered with them.)</p>
<p>@wimmiett i saw many of the past years’ essays in this thread were posted after deadlines. i think it’s wise just to do the same for the same “safety” reason.</p>
<p>@Doremi1995 I think one of the best things about UChicago’s admissions (just judging from the admitted essays) is that you actually don’t necessarily have to write on the wackiest topic; it seems like they’re just as impressed if you’re able to write well and find something new in a simple topic :)</p>
<p>guys, I’m freaking out. I have an essay draft written but I’m scared it sucks and I don’t know what to do. All the teachers who promised to proofread it bailed on me. I need a hug. Sorry for the rant.</p>
<p>@cutiepie1 May I PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE send you my essay?</p>
<p>I’ve already submitted my app, but I’d still LOVE your opinion!</p>
<p>@ironchariot : I can’t give you a hug, but here you go:</p>
<p><a href=“http://www.how-to-write-college-essay.com/uploads/6/9/2/0/692026/12_college_admission_essays_that_worked.pdf”>http://www.how-to-write-college-essay.com/uploads/6/9/2/0/692026/12_college_admission_essays_that_worked.pdf</a></p>
<p>It certainly helped me. So I hope you also find it useful.</p>
<p>@Mashoo The easter bunny one was so fun!
@ironchariot Don’t Panic! (Hitchhiker’s Guide, anyone? lol) Also Harry Bauld’s book on writing college essays (sorry, can’t remember the title) is totally awesome, it’s a quick read and it gives great ideas for both getting topics and editing your drafts. It’s available on ereaders if you have one. Plus if it makes you feel better, a lot of the accepted people who’ve posted here didn’t feel confident about theirs, but they were obviously amazing. You may be your own harshest critic.</p>
<p>@EnoughNerve thank you for saying this! i think it’s also one of my reasons for loving UChicago - maybe i was just too nervous that i started comparing others’ essays to mine. i really should focus on how i can best show myself as a person. :)</p>
<p>i’m very sorry to hear that @ironchariot! hug hug from China…</p>
<p>Sure! PM me</p>
<p>Mashoo, it is not recommended that you send your essays to random strangers on the internet claiming to be a soon-to-be student at UChicago. It is very possible that cutiepie1 is another applicant who is indecent enough to plagiarize.</p>
<p>Although if you’ve already submitted your app, I guess that’s okay lol</p>
<p>International95-- I really am going to UChicago but yes, in general it is not a good idea to send your essay or post it publicly (even though probably no one would want to risk getting into that kind of trouble). I was honestly just trying to help out, but take it as whatever you want.</p>
<p>@International95 : I see what you mean. And although I trust you cutiepie1, I guess I’ll just wait for my admission decision. </p>
<p>I’m so scared. I really, really want this. :S
As do all of you, of course.</p>
<p>It’s so funny every time UChicago sends out a message that ends in “Chill out!” or “Don’t worry!” Like that’s possible lol.</p>
<p>question: is a page and a half double spaced enough for the extended essay? it
s a bit less than a page single spaced</p>
<p>If it’s good, then the no of words shouldn’t be a problem, I guess. See, at University fairs, the reps are always stressing on how people send REALLY long essays and they lose interest, so I suppose that, if anything, they will bless you. ;)</p>
<p>I hope they will Mashoo</p>
<p>How’s everyone with their application?
I just submitted all my stuff…</p>
<p>I’m really nervous because I wrote a really long Why UChicago essay and didn’t find what’s wrong when I couldn’t submit, until I realized it should be around 500 max. I had to edit and submit my shorter “back-up” draft, instead the other one which I feel more confident about. I’m really starting to feel bad now…</p>
<p>Anyway, good luck with everyone who’s still in progress!</p>
<p>lol post essays?</p>
<p>mine is pretty funny tbh. I always laugh at my “brick-head-ness” when I look at them.</p>
<p>Decision: Accepted</p>
<h1>Essay 1</h1>
<p>How does the University of Chicago, as you know it now, satisfy your desire for a particular kind of learning, community, and future? Please address with some specificity your own wishes and how they relate to UChicago.
I didn’t get too much information about UChicago from rankings or counsellors. The first encounter I had with the Maroons was an online joke: a student answered a question asking to “find x” by circling the letter. Someone then commented that “this has gone so viral that even a university is using it as an essay question.” I checked out the link (<a href=“https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/essays/past.shtml”>https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/essays/past.shtml</a>), and went “whoa”.
UChicago then became the “evilest” university I knew. (I wondered how many people wrote about a mathematics test…) The wit and creativity are something I have not seen in my education, where there are prescribed answers to the “thinking cap” questions. I believe education could be an experience, an adventure, a journey; an endeavor to triumph over the “evilness” that challenges students to stretch their boundaries of thought and imagination.
That adventure of a lifetime is uniquely a UChicago experience, where everyone shares a similar Core, studying Kant and Civilization Studies together and discussing intellectually for hours on a common subject - a learning environment not any school can provide. I would become better-rounded, elevate my perspective to see things from contrasting approaches and understand the world in a wider sense.
Which is, perhaps, what is most required in the realm of computer science. Interdisciplinary research is crucial because modern developments in computer science are facilitated by different fields, be it linguistics in Google Search, sociology and psychology in AdSearch, or mathematics and physics in quantum information processing. UChicago provides the breadth of Core but also the depth of research in Computer Science. Projects such as studying language morphology in project Linguistica or simulating high-energy density physics experiments in FLASH Center show the application of my favorite field of study. They enable me to apply programming critically in my favorite foreign fields and satisfy my desire to utilize computing in real-life situations. Internship and career opportunities with Google, Facebook, and Twitter etc. can also provide me insight as to how computing is applied in the corporate world.
A long history of physics at UChicago attracts me as well, especially since it is at the forefront of research in the new fields of subatomic physics. Fermilab, the world’s first nuclear reactor CP-1 and numerous Nobel accolades demonstrate UChicago’s keen focus on cutting-edge experimentation-based research. The Enrico Fermi Institute also combines several of my favorite fields of study, including high-energy physics, string theory and cosmology. UChicago provides a unique opportunity for me to see how the theoretical comes to life in physics and better understand the world of research.
A pursuer of the Arts, I could also convert my experience in my A’ Cappella club into passion for the various A’ Cappella groups in UChicago, which have been nominated for various awards more than any other schools in CASA. Or could I seek inspiration from the treasured Persian artifacts in the Oriental Institute and compose a music piece titled “Persepolis?” …
All I know is that UChicago is not “where fun goes to die!”</p>
