Post your own state's college reputations'

I am from Hong Kong; can anyone tell me some good universities for chemistry/biochemistry major?

I recently got accepted into Purdue, Penn State, Miami U.
Purdue’s chem dept seems to be ranked 16th while Penn State is ranked 18th.

MIT or Caltech?

im assuming their chem departments are good

Jethro, NCSU is an urban campus in that it is surrounded by the busy streets of Raleigh. It is a self-contained campus (no city streets running thru it). Maybe not a beautiful campus by classical standards but does have some green space and a good mix of old traditional buildings and the new more modern kind. Instead of a campus quad State has the Brickyard, a huge area paved in bricks with mosiac patterns that is right in the middle of the classroom buildings. It’s a mingling spot for students and a lot of activites take place here. NCSU is well known for their engineering programs and the college of management is the fastest growing of late. Also known for agriculture and science majors. Not the school you would think of for liberal arts (that would be UNC-CH). Lots of school spirit for football/basketball games(esp. UNC-CH). Dorms are air conditioned (important in the south), most are co-ed. New on-campus apartments are very nice. Food is decent. Lots of convenience stores (run by the school, not 7-11) around campus so you can get most things you need to live without leaving campus but there are stores within walking distance and a campus busline if you need something off campus. Greek life is present but does not seem to dominate. Majority of students are from NC but out of staters have no trouble fitting in. My S is a freshman at NCSU and has friends from several states other than NC. With over 25,000, you can find kids of all types. S. loves it there.

Stanford- elite…big surprise, huh?

UC Berkeley- extremely rigorous and selective, but great place to be if you can get in( gotta love norcal)

UCLA- also very selective and rigorous, but not as much as Berkeley. This is a college that a lot of people in my HS really want to go to

UC Davis- great for science- if you want to be a veterinarian, put this at the top of your list (okay location, I drive by it every time I head up to Lake Tahoe, a little bit in the middle of nowhere)

UC San Diego- very difficult to get into, everybody loves San Diego

UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz- party schools but still pretty selective

USC- very similar to UCLA, very selective

I already seen a post about NC, but I guess I will add a little more.

UNC-CH- Super cool and awesome, nice school to go to if you are in-state and smart.

Duke- Generally famous for its basketball and sciences…good school, but Durham is not such a great town…

UNC-Charolotte- Urban, dirty, bad place for a collge.

UNC-Ash- Super nice place, awesome people and nice place to live, you will have tons of fun there.

UNC- Willmington- Nice place, campus has a quaint feeling to it.

UNC- Pembrooke- You really dont want to go there unless you are a drop out or a native american…

ElizabathTown- Has a movie of the same name…its a HCBU, not very popular.

Gulliford College- Never been there, so i cannt say anything bad or good, but from what I heard, it has a good party scene.

ECU/WCU- major party schools, nothing interesting there…except for a few houses and a few more houses…

NC central- HCBU, their campus is really nice, some of the building are new and reinnvoated due a mold problem that they had…

NC AT&T- Aggie’s football…thats about it…

Wake Forest- Small and private, very awesome to go to…but a little too small for me…

NC state- Its in Raleigh, I hate that city, always get lost in the middle of no where…unless you want to become a engineer or they give you a full-ride, dont go…

Chowan college- very interesting, conserative and but the people over there are good looking, beware that it is in the middle of no where…and there are 3700 total residents (college included) in marfreesboro…so no very big…

B_B

why say not to go to NC State? Im going into their business program, and I love it down there (coming from the north). And I actually think Raleigh is nice, and its definately growing. I didnt get a full ride, and obviously I dont do engineering, but Im still going there. (3.7 GPA 25 ACT). Just because people arent as smart as others, or dont try as hard, doesnt mean that the place is bad, and Ive been seeing that from a lot of people. Its pretty frustrating that since a school isnt top 30 in the nation its considered bad on here. not everyone is as lucky as some of the people on here.

Look for the Atlantic Monthly article about the gap closing between first tier and lower considered schools.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If you don’t think highly of a school, you certainly shouldn’t go there but it is unfair and rude to state opinions in such a way as to be offensive to those who may be attending or planning to attend schools mentioned.

Packmom, back off. Everything posted here is somebody’s opinion and it would be pretty boring if they were all favorable. If you don’t like an unfavorable opinion, you don’t have to agree with it, but it is asking too much to expect everyone to protect your feelings.

As Alice Roosevelt Longworth once said, “If you don’t have something nice to say, come sit here by me.”

haha well said. if people didnt post unfavorable accounts of schools or their experiences it would be misleading to people considering those schools

And most people are misleading like that. As a caveat, it’s better to focus on positive things, but not ignore those that are negative- acknowledge and try to change them.

But what he said wasn’t very relevant. He really didnt talk about the education (outside of the engineering program) and basically said if you dont go to NC State for that, theres no reason to go there. And to me, thats very misleading.

Its very annoying when people on these boards think that only highly ranked schools are the best way to go. If you dont get into an Ivy League, you act like your life is over. Well, theres more things to life then school. I wanted to go somewhere and experience college to the fullest, with the saturday afternoon football games and good school spirit with nice people. Which is exactly why I WOULDNT want to go to a harvard/princeton/ect. school. But thats just me. A lot of people like to work and not have much fun, which is fine, because in the long run you might be a very successful doctor, or you might be the next ken jennings ;). But to me, I felt (and still do) good about myself when I got accepted to NC State. I’ve been a little above average student (people think average is 1300 SAT though) my whole life, and to get into a state school out of state was an accomplishment FOR ME.

You convinced me. NC State may be good for you and not very good for certain others.

Hawaii–
Flagship is University of Hawaii which has one campus on Oahu (where most of the state lives). It has some great departments that have international recognition. Unfortunately, it has a very “commuter” atmosphere. It is where most kids from the public high schools attend (or their connected system of community colleges & then transferring to the U to get bachelor’s), as well as a significant % of private HS students. Many students graduating with a bachelor’s from UH go on to graduate or professional school elsewhere, tho some choose to get their graduate or professional degree from UH. Their law school & med school have rising reputations (competition to attend is very fierce, due to rising rep & low tuition). It also has a campus in Hilo, which is noted for excellent marine biology & astronomy (they work with the world famous telescope & observatory on Mauna Kea). Dorming is available at that campus.

Chaminade University is a smaller religous school in suburban neighborhood. Many excellent teachers graduate from Chaminade. Don’t know much about it’s other departments. It shares part of its campus with a private boy’s HS.

Hawaii Pacific University has two campuses–one has dorms & is located in the beautiful suburban setting of Kaneohe (very green, often drizzles, sort of like tropical Northwest). The other campus is in downtown Honolulu and they have a shuttle to get students between the campuses, or you can catch the city bus or drive. My son took a statistics course over the summer at the downtown campus & decided he’d prefer a less commuter experience when he goes to college.

BYU-UH is located in rural Laie and connected with the Polynesian Cultural Center. It is known to have a lot of mormons attending & seems to have many students from the various Pacific Islands. Many students work at the cultural center to help pay for their education (dancing, singing, serving as tour guide, etc.)

too true. going to an ivy league school shouldnt be looked at as a requirement for a successful life. many people who go to ivies just end up miserable since they picked the school based on prestige rather than how it personally fit them

Also true that there are a lot of people who are in denial and want collusion with their delusion that their school is just as good as any other.

[Oh, I know, don’t carry on about fit. Sure, every school must be just right for somebody.]

Thats not it at all eulen.

NC State isnt nearly as good of a school as a lot, but to say not to go there is ridiculous. Im not saying “my school” is as good as an ivy league school, Im saying my school fits me, and people on this whole message board have this mentality that if they don’t get into a highly prestigous school their life is over.

DRAB SAYS :" Look for the Atlantic Monthly article about the gap closing between first tier and lower considered schools."

Does anyone know the TITLE of this article ? I tried to google it .

It’s on this website. I think it’s called “Who needs Harvard?” Or something like that. If that is a second article, it will probably be around the first.
