Radiocure:
Disagree somewhat with your comments about RWU as being a party school, and easy to attend. Roger Williams has become more difficult for admissions these past 2 years. My D’s 2 friends from her PRIVATE high school were both waitlisted, and then rejected from Roger Williams this past year. One boy from last year was also rejected. They were all pretty good students, with average SAT scores. Not a big party school much anymore, or no more than say, Providence College. Best known for Marine studies, Architecture, Law, and business too. Pretty nice place, as a couple of my daughter’s friends (who graduated 1-2 years ago) are now attending. I also have a nephew attending.

The public honors college of the SUNY System
Party school because it’s in the middle of nowhere

Va Tech solid engineering/fun school/very isolated/ great sports
Viriginia : awesome grad school/ undergrad not as strong/ egos and grades both inflated here but serious partying going on.
W&L: better academics but similar attitudes to State U @ C’ville
W&M: best students go here/not as wild but students still have fun
Richmond: similar in academics to UVa but smaller campus/bigger city

Ohio!!! GO BUCKS!!! The BEST D*** band in the land!!! (and football team)!!! The school isn’t that great but the sports-- basketball and football are the best!!! WOOH can’t wait for sat.!!!

Alright, I’ve only seen one WA post throughout the first 5 pages, so I’ll do WA

UW-Top state school, where the majority of the top half/top third of graduating class goes to. Some of the best students in my graduating class(especially those on a budget) will go to the UW Honors program, which is very presitigious from what I know of. Great med school and law school.
Washington State-Significantly worse than UW, considered the school that kids go to if they don’t get into UW. HUGE party school. Pretty much laughed at by many in the western half of the state…I don’t know it’s reputation on the eastern side(where it’s located). I think it is known for it’s agriculture department, but I don’t honestly know.
Western Washington-Kind of a trendy pick for kids who either don’t get into UW or don’t apply. In a cool college town, so many prefer it to Wazzu(washington state). I don’t really know what programs it is known for.
Central Washington-Safety school, has a decent honors program, super cheap school.
Eastern-Big safety, don’t know anything about it really, besides that it’s in a gross town in the middle of some farmlands, and that they have a super good basketball player this year.
Seattle U-Popular pick for catholic kids who want to stay in town
Seattle Pacific-Don’t know too much about it, it’s in a pretty cool neighborhood of seattle though.
University of Puget Sound-Good liberal arts school, suffers mightily because of its awful location(Tacoma, WA). I think it’s more popular with out of staters, who don’t know how bad the city is(Tacoma’s nickname is the Armpit of the Northwest, for it’s pulp mills)
Pacific Lutheran University-Decent private school, also located in Tacoma. Beautiful campus in a complete ghetto.
Evergreen State-The alternative school for hippies/activists/counter-culture types. It’s public, so it’s pricetag is very affordable, and was formed in the 1960s to offer an alternative to UW/Wazzu. All classes are team-taught, and they dont issue grades, but rather written evaluations. There is usually a haze of smoke over the campus, drugs are everywhere.
Whitman College-Considered by those in the know to be the best school in the state. One of the unknown liberal arts gems in the country. Tucked away into the corner of southeast Washington, so it’s location is very, very isolated.

I completly forgot about Gonzaga

Gonzaga-decent catholic school in Spokane. Known for it’s awesome basketball team(one of my good friends on my basketball team has a full ride there). Not terribly well known for it’s academics, but it does draw some students away from UW who want a smaller enviroment.

Quinsigamond Community College
They are really really easy. One girl said that she was scared passing in a paper 2 weeks late because of some family thing. The professor laughed and said, youre the only one who has passed this in so far.

^ I know this was months ago, but this is completely WRONG. I attend this school, and it is one of the best CCs in the country. On top of this, the waiting list for Nursing, and RadTech programs are 8 years long…AND I have been penalized for missing a test, because it’s a Jewish Holiday, so I have no clue where you got that load b.s from.

Oregon…

University of ORegon (all the cool preppy kids who like to smoke and hang out go here…especially all the “smart” writers and artsy peeps"

Oregon State: for anyone who wants to be an engineer this is a great school for us peeps in Oregon and we are all like WOW YOU GOT AN ENGINEERING DEGREE FROM OSU YOU MUST BE THE SMARTEST PERSON IN AMERICA!!!

Portland State University: The “business school” everyone goes here who has a GPA from 2.5-3.5

Portland Community College: the king of Oregon colleges literally Every single person starts off here for some reason and then transfers.

REED: The best school in Oregon by FAAAAAAAAAR bu many people don’t know anything about it because they could never bwe considered, and the people who could be considered think they are too good for it.

University of Portland: 3rd best college, great at everything, if you want to stay in portland you will have great job opportunities

Linfield: 2nd best… only good for your bachelors (number 1 comprehensive college in the west) really for white preppy kids who want to play fot ball but arent good enough for D1(50 consecutive seasons with a winning record)

I have yet to read an ARIZONA post ever on CC so my guess is that no one’s done my home state yet, and since ASU is pretty popular, here’s my two cents.

NAU-- from what I can tell, land of the music and education major. Flagstaff is nice (read: cold) and picturesque. It’s a pretty big school, but it pales in comparison to…

U of A-- Wildcats, anyone? My friends aspiring to be future doctors and want to go in-state typically go with U of A. Excellent basketball team. Plus, I live 15 minutes within ASU and for some of my friends, this closeness to home was a serious concern, so they moved out to Tucson. I personally am not a fan of Tucson, but I’m also not a fan of U of A, though the academics here are apparently much better than those of ASU. It is a good school though, promise…

ASU-- The sunshine, the college town, the classic massive publlic state school, what’s there not to love? Well for starters it’s no secret that the average ASU student isn’t the sharpest crayon in the box. But considering the Honors program is great and that the school has a bazillion students (that’s an exact figure, guys), my brilliant friends who stayed in-state have a lot of good company at ASU. Also the business program is nationally ranked. ASU is so big that honestly you can’t pigeonhole it into anything (partyers, preppies, golden blondes, druggies, nerds…) The way some people describe USC, is the way I would describe ASU. I don’t know whether that’s good or bad. :-)

Virginia:

UVA - Half the kids in Fairfax apply. Top ranked school nationally. Seen as a preppy, stuck up school.

William and Mary - Seen as a girl’s college for people who want to study english or history and kill themselves.

George Mason - Seen as the crappy backup by Fairfax students despite it being a good school that is better than JMU and VT (in some aspects).

James Madison - STD party school. Many average students from fairfax go there.

Virginia Tech - Above average fairfax students go. Perceived as the choice after UVA.

Old Dominion - Nobody has much of an opinion.

Radford - STD party school.

Christopher Newport - See above.

NOVA - Seen as horrible by many snobby FX students but it is a good way to get life back on track.

University of Richmond (private) - Nobody has opinions. I would put it just below UVA and W&M.

There’s been some New Jersey posts, but some are a bit off:

Tier 1: Princeton
Tier 2: TCNJ, Rutgers, Ramapo, Rowan, Stevens,
Tier 4: Stockton, Montclair, Centenary, Kean, William Paterson, Rider, Monmouth, NJIT
Tier 5: Community College

In a typical public high school in New Jersey:

Few, if any dare apply to Princeton. The valedictorian went there a few years ago.

TCNJ - Many, many many many smart kids apply and attend TCNJ. If you’re intelligent, but no genius, you have a huge chance of going there. I would say over half of the top 10% of our class is going there.

Rutgers - most of the average to above average kids apply there, or the good athletes. It’s a good state school but easy to get into.

Ramapo, Rowan and Stevens are all solid schools that have certain programs or specialities that make them especially good schools. Ramapo will probably take at least 10% of our graduating class.

The other schools are all of the generic state schools that the middle to bottom students apply to just for the sake of going to college. Also, a lot of kids end up at community colleges.

University of Florida- its getting really selective, alot of people i thought that would get in got rejected, it has great sports, ganiesvilles is in hickville but it does have a really poor black ghetto on the other side of town, alot of ppl think UF is overrated and ppl that go there are kinda stuck up, but alot of ppl are also bad they didnt get in, the girls arent as good looking as UCF or FSU, parties are good, there are no good strip clubs and the clubs are just ok, overall the first choice for most of the top 10%, its a massive student population around like 50,000

Florida State Unviersity- alot of rejects from UF go here, hardcore party school, fine looking girls, Good film program, great football, tally is kinda out of nowhere, but its a beautiful city hills and those big weeping trees, im from south florida, and alot of ppl that goto FSU just there to get a different climate

University of Central Florida- another huge student body, 45,000, alot of kids from south florida, all new buildings, most of the kids that goto college from my HS go here, good looking girls, just built a big new stadium, good facilities like gym, and dorms, its getting harder to get into, there cracking down on drinking, alot of frats have been suspended, good clubs and bars, its just outside of orlando in kind of a suburban setting, so there is alot of driving if you want to do anything off campus, the orlando metro area is a huge area, good honors college, you dont really need to study 1.UF 2a. FSU 2b. UCF

University of South Florida- Kinda like UCF but in Tampa, its football team is getting better, in the future it could become UCF, best strip clubs, great clubs, good medicine, everything else is kinda a step down from everyone else

Florida International- In the ghetto of Miami, it actually has really good international bussiness program, but you need to know spanish because no1 speaks english there

University of West Florida- small cheap school, no1 really goes there, good-looking campus its in like a state park

University of North Florida- Where all the UF UCF FSU rejects will go because they will get lots of money, and anyone who wants to stay at home or couldnt get into another university. alot of ppl go there for one year and transfers to UCF or FSU, next to a beach, good surf, soccer teams, alot of beach bums go there

Florida Atlantic- its in Boca Raton, alot of palm beach and broward kids go there, all the kids who are too middle class to goto FIU, alot of commuter students, it has an interesting program where you can go there as pre-med and it is associated with UM, so do 2years at FAU and you end up with your degree from UM, FAU gives out alot of money and is a great buy, because you can just transfer your credits to any other state school you didn’t get into like UF

University of Miami- too expensive. it is literally in the ghetto, there is the campus, and the nice houses of coral glabes, then two or three lights away its check cashing stores and crack heads, but if you drive past the ghetto you end up in south beach and coconut grove (very trendy hip clubs), lots to do around UM, great football, you do have to take a tram from the campus through a crapy neighborhood to get to the stadium, its a clicky place, the rich kids commute, alot of white kids and spanish kids, they do give out good scholarships if your smart enough, its an alternative to UF if you have the money

Nova Southeastern Uni. - huge student body, small campus, alot of commuters, most students are mid-20s, it produces the most doctors in the south east, great medical school, alot of people goto state schools for pre-med and get there medical degrees at Nova, its business school is good, alot of people get their masters as they work at nova

rollins, florida southern, barry, weber international, norwood - no1 really goes there, they give out alot of athletics scholarships, i know a few kids who are on scholarship at some of those schools for baseball

new college of florida - new liberal arts school, its in sarasota, its the best public liberal art school, it is uber democratic, really left wing liberals, its small with pretty buildings, the only person i know going there is one of those unshaven legs, i’ll move to canada if bush gets re-elected uber democracts who are really outspoken about there views

here’s my view of Ohio (I’m from Toledo)

Ohio State: academics are getting better, super popular (at least 1/3 of my friends go here)
Kent State: “Kent read, Kent write, Kent State”
Ohio U: party school
Toledo: high school part II

UCSB- known for parties not for school, although they are ranked 45th !!! in the entire nation and one of the higher ranked international school (higher than their national ranking oddly enough) You’ll are just down on it because thats where the smart kids go who do **** for something other than college in high school.

UCI - total Asian school. More of a business park than a campus. Great if you want to go straight from a high school (wasting all your time trying to get into college) to the rest of your life (the place looks like its stuffed full of cubicles and the main hall is EXACTLY like a business lobby)

Cal (because i can’t spell Berkeley) - great school but very very dirty, ghetto and hippie. Oaktown is taking over. I wouldn’t go there if I got in, which luckily enough, I won’t

All the CMCs - very country club like, quiet, probably good for some people, not for me.

UCSC - has a stoner school reputation, all I know (my English teacher went there)

UCSD - another quiet school, seems scholarly and almost a museum vibe when walking around.

UCLA - best all around school IMO. Ivy like campus (thats where they film all of the college movies at - Van Wilder, Old School, etc.) great academics, sports, location, social life. Seems like theres a lot going on there all the time

Stanford - small, quiet, stereotypical Ivy looking campus. Plus they reject students who obviously put there whole lives into getting into college!!! Well rounded diverse kids get in,(UCLA also) its awsome!!!

PARENTS ON THIS SITE. Read on

DO NOT PUSH YOUR KIDS INTO THINGS, LET THEM CHOOSE, LET THEM CONTROL THEIR LIVES,

My parents let me do my own thing and I am solely responsible for all my applications/admissions. I ran my life as I saw fit and did **** I wanted to do. I never did anything just to get into college (except study kinda I guess…) Extra Curriculars are not supposed to be a bragging list, but an insight into a students life. How many people do you think apply to Harvard with a 4.0 and a 2400, editor of newspaper and 5000 community service hours? Do **** that you want to do and are not just interested in for your perfect application. The schools will pick which student is right for them. Changing the person that the schools see can lead to mismatches and four years of unhappiness. YOU WILL GET IN WHERE YOU FIT IN…

That is my rant after ONE day of reading this forum trying to find when a decision comes out. Get a life, relax and remember, most of the people on this site will be going to grad school, even me, in which case your undergrad school DOES NOT MATTER, just your academic performance. Its better to kill at UCSB than to struggle for 5 years at UCLA.

UMCP: party school with good academics, sport fanatics
UMBC: much more quiet, semi-ghetto, people mostly go there to take advantage of scholarships which UMCP lacks
UMES: ghetto, for underachievers who don’t want to go to a community college

Louisiana:

LSU: Most people I know end up going here. It’s fairly easy to get into, although the standards are increasing and I know a few people that got rejected this year. All the students LOVE football, and tailgating before the games. Some people come in motor homes on Thursdays. There is nothing like Saturday Night in Death Valley, which holds 92,000 people. There are tons of people here so classes are hard to get scheduled, and most people end up 5th year seniors. Most students could care less about their classes, except if you are in the Honors College. Dorms are pretty small. Greek life is big. LSU is a huge party school.

Mcneese: The only people I know that have gone here wanted to play football. I really don’t know much about it.

ULL: Wants to be LSU

Tulane: Tulane is in New Orleans, and it’s a wonderful city, despite what you may have heard. The city is still recovering, but it’s doing okay, and there is so much to do here. The food is wonderful, and you can always find a party if you want it, because New Orleans never sleeps. Usually the smarter kids go here. Not great at sports except baseball. They had to cut a lot of their sports teams because of the hurricane.

La Tech/Southeastern: Really don’t know much about them

CALIFORNIA UC’s. My opinion after visiting most of the schools and reading reviews and actually talking to people of the various schools. Posted in order of supposed academic reputation/ most wanted UC.

UC BERKLEY: Rigorous academics. Used to be know for it’s politically active student body, but now it’s being replaced by academics and a lot of scholarly asian and white people. REALLY focused on acadmics. And coming from the Bay Area, I must clarify something that’s really irritating, the city of Berkeley is NO WHERE NEAR BEING A GHETTO. Get it straight people. On the plus side, really good food choices on and off the campus. Cut. Throat. Academic. Competition.

UCLA: Awesome overall school. Pretty campus. Well rounded in academics, sports, social life. But a lot of seemingly rich people mixed in with nerds. As someone mentioned before, known for the whole “white kids lost in asian population thing”. Known for Pre med mostly, though I’ve heard it’s film aspect is awesome.

USC: Never been there, but from what I hear, “school of spoiled rich kids” though it supposedly has good academics.

UCSD aka :University of the Socially Dead/Deficit. Know for Mostly for science and engineer. Have to drive over to San Diego State if you want to party at all, trust me. Other wise it’s just hanging out in dorms or beach, or studying (which seems to be the pick of most people) in the gi-normous library. Large asian population. Pretty campus though.

UCSB: Party school. Really big party school. Known for it’s white population and partying students. The academics here are supposedly up to par. However the partying outshadows that point. But it is a good school.

Did I mention the partying?

UCI: Really big commuter school, so while there is a social scene, it’s not that big. Good for engineering and business and also if you want to focus on getting a job and don’t really care about the whole “college life experience” that the other UC’s offer. Large asian population. Academics are good.

UCD: Asian population. A lot from a school known as Lowell in San Francisco. Small college town. Good academics. Ok social scene, just a lot of Asian’s from the Bay Area trying to continue the same “good times” they had in high school… but in Davis. Yeah.

UCSC: Replacing Berkeley for the whole politically active, hippie society. Known for it’s drugs, BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS, and large tree-hugging population. Predominately white. It has a reputation as being the “slacker school”, but I think after visiting it’s because it’s such a chill place and all the students aren’t focused on academic grades (though they are surprisingly VERY good, it just doesn’t have the cut-throat competition that the other UC’s have), rather they focus on getting “life experience” by protesting, walking in the woods, and surfing. Isolated place though, which could drive a person to insanity.

UCR: Not much I know, or anyone else, except that it’s a last resort.

SUNY Binghamton–depressing town, but much to do on campus, good academics, prof some good some bad, many only are concerned with their grad students, too many TA’s teaching undergrad courses, diverse student body but not geographic,

SUNY Albany–party school, good accounting program

SUNY Buffalo–party school, some excellent programs, ethnically diverse student body

Stony Brook–good in the science, way too many Asian students, commuter school

SUNY New Paltz–more like an urban school as far as student body, more hispanics less asians, artsy, hippie types

SUNY Geneseo–“where all the smart kids go”, “in the middle of no where”, party school, strong academics, “past two years 94% of students who applied to medical school were accepted”, high number of Goldwater Scholarships, “hidden gem”, “Honors College”

does anyone from NY know the “tiers” of the SUNY schools? Does anyone know how SUNY Brockport and SUNY Oswego rank?

hey why doesn’t anyone from california mention occidental college in LA ? I know it is a very good school
