The best piece of advice to give to a new parent about potty training is that it is not a race. This is one of the first times as a parent that you need to “look the other way” as you hear stories of superman/woman toddlers who potty train at 9 months, 15 months, 2 years or whatever - and just look at your child signals that they are physically and mentally ready.
Two of my three kids wet the bed until they hit puberty!!! I am not joking. We tried EVERYTHING, even taking the older one to a doctor. He said some kids just sleep too soundly. About half of kids who wet the bed at one age will be dry by the next year. Ours were just in the slowest category! It was a hard situation for years.
My own recollections about this period in my children’s development is pretty vague as well, but I do know D was ready slightly befor age 2 and that S was almost 3. Do you think boys take longer to train than girls? I was told that a lot during the time I was potty training my kids. If it’s true, I wonder why (though I do have my “theories”).
It sounds male privilege skips potty training.
According to Felix Unger of “The Odd Couple,” he was potty trained at 5 months, and “training others” at 7 months
Our pediatrician offered some nasal drops that really helped with preventing night-time accidents until the bladder matured well enough for the kiddo to not have a wet bed. We also had waterproof covering over the mattress. It was definitely a process with some of our relatives.
The lone piece of advice that has stayed with me decades after training our kids is not to let it turn into a battle, since the kid has all the ammunition.
Can’t remember if it was Erma Bombeck who said this, or maybe a funny friend.
No one has mentioned the bell and pad used for bedwetters. I do not know if is around anymore or, if so, how it might have changed.
Pediatricians and therapists rec. it for kids past 8 yrs. A pad under the sheet and when it became moist a bell went off.
It was successful for many kids/families. The kids learned how to wake him/her self up. It took a few weeks.
Another vote for the book, “Toilet Training in Less Than a Day.” It combines multiple training techniques covering different learning styles. We used it 4 times. Only one son took a little longer to night train. He was our soundest sleeper.
My 4 kids are less than 5 years apart. I LOVED this book! -and no steam cleaner required to follow around naked kiddos!
