Thank you all for the prayers and well wishes. There has been minimal improvement , but she is far from being well. It is a complicated situation since I share ownership…she is home with us and puppies are doing well , however she cannot be with them.
Her liver is in bad shape and the doctors don’t entirely know why. We are hoping for improvements in her liver functions , but have to accept that it might not happen.
In addition to her illness, I am being bombarded with conflicting information between the breeder and also the vet.
They are still concerned about her ability to clot her blood…she is eating well and drinking well and realy happy to be home with us ( I feel sad that she had to be taken away from her pups so abruptly but she cannot nurse them )
I am a nervous wreck and scared to leave her …
So please keep her in your thoughts
Regarding the conflicting information … would it be helpful to get everyone in the same room/ on the same phone call to discuss the disease and treatment? Often breeders know quite about about their specific breed and their lines, more than the vets in many cases because the breeder has seen these specfic things before.
This must be terribly upsetting to you – it’s good that the pups are weaning. Sending positive thoughts …
@cnp55, geography created some challenges …breeder has been out of state , the animal hospital was 1.5 hour drive and multiple vets taking care of her
Prayers from North Carolina!
@lje62 I’m so sorry you and your furry girl are going through this. Serious illness with a dog is so incredibly stressful. Is there an emergency veterinary hospital near you? One with specialists? One of our dogs contracted hemolytic anemia several years ago, and the specialists that our vet referred us to are the ones who saved her life. Even at that, they told us that she had less than a 50% chance of surviving the night she was admitted. She was there in ICU for a week before finally turning the corner. She lived for four more years, albeit under regular vet observation and on many meds. Those specialists were amazingly talented. I learned so much about them during our time there.
I wish you and your dog the best of luck.
Is the liver condition acquired, congenital or familial to the breed? It would be helpful to have everyone involved on a conference call. Is there a specialist at a nearby Vet school or hospital like NY Animal Medical Center that could be contacted. I realize that being co-owner is difficult. Sending prayers and hugs.
Hello everyone ! The liver condition was unknown…there was a possibility of her eating a rotting bird corpse and ingesting some type of toxin , but I am not buying that theory. She has lived with us as a family member for over a year and when she got pregnant, her appetite and energy level plummeted.
When we visited her after the pups were 2.5 weeks old , she still didn’t seem like she was feeling well and not eating well either. She didn’t even seem all that enthusiastic to see us.
Although it has been a long and strressful week , she has really turned a corner and is improving every day
A week ago when I requested prayers and support, she was on the verge of death . Today her tests are showing dramatic improvement in the liver ans she is clearly feeling better
The power of prayer from near and far was a contributing factor for sure
The vet thinks she might full recover
So thank you for all of the support <3
Wonderful hopeful news! Sending wishes for continued strength and healing.
Great news! Thank you for the update. Hoping she will make a full recovery - will continue to pray for your sweet pup.
So happy to hear!
Glad she is on the mend! All that love works wonders!
Fanrastic news! So glad to hear that she is getting better.
That is good news!
I’m so relieved to hear this. Does the breeder show her? If not, she sounds like a candidate for spaying when she recovers. It would be hard to take the risk of breeding her again…
The breeder of my first golden at one point owned the #1 female in the country. After she retired, she had one litter, maybe two, but they had to spay her to save her life due to pyometra.
I don’t pray, but I am thinking of you and your dog and wishing you well. I am glad your dog is recovering.
Dogs are truly members of the family. Our previous dog died a couple of years ago, and we were so sad. We have a new dog now, and we love him too. But there are still moments when we are reminded of, and profoundly miss, the old dog.
@lje62 I’m so happy to hear the good news! Continued good thoughts and hugs to you!
If I may add something to the theory of your dog eating a dead bird. My daughter is a vet student doing an externship this summer with an avian vet. She said that many birds ingest toxic material. While it is a VERY outside chance, it may be possible that your dog ate the carcass of a bird that died due to metal toxicity. This would affect her liver enzymes. You will probably never know the true cause, but so happy now for you and your fur baby.
@ECmotherx2 , that is very interesting to hear. I know that the breeder runs a really tight ship and very clean …the bird carcass was discovered days late ( because she left the morning after our girl hesitated before coming back when she was called ) She told me that when she walked out , two of her dogs were sniffing around under a bush where she found the decomposed remains of a blue-jay…do you know where the metal toxicity could have originated from ?
She lives on a proper adjacent to a large state park and the wildlife spills onto her property ( which honestly is charming )
We will never know with certainty what happened , but I am so grateful for all of the prayers and positive thoughts sent on her behalf…she is such a sweet, sweet dog and very well loved . Many people , including her vets have wanted to be on the waitlist for her pups because she has such a great disposition
Today I saw a picture posted on FB of her puppies at the vet, all being held by various staff members ( who can resist a little golden fluff ball ) I don’t know why , but it evoked strong emotions in me. I know that they are in and will be in good hands. I have to claim to them whatsoever. I feel so sad that their time with mama was cut short and they missed out …as she also missed out.
My husband says I should just concentrate on the fact that she is alive and getting stronger.
