Predict the Class of 2018 acceptance rate

Last year, the Stanford applicant pool consisted of 38,828 students, up from 36,631 the year before. That’s about a six percent increase. If we assume a similar increase this year, then approximately 41,000 students will apply.

Stanford admitted 2,210 to the Class of 2017, which safely assumed what seemed to be an unprecedented yield rate of 77% (target class size: 1,700). The yield rate for the Class of 2017 was 76.7%. Given this yield rate, the admission office will likely be more conservative this year. It will likely be safe by assuming a yield rate of 79%. This means that it will likely admit approximately 2,150 applicants.

2,150/41,000 = 5.24% acceptance rate.
