Hebrews 13:4.

Hebrews 13:4.

^^Okay. But I am interested in his/her response to my parenthetical question.

^How does quoting a verse/bible (I don’t know religious texts at all, I admit) make it truth?

Marriage is a social construct established by Religion. Since there is no justification as to why having a religion is bad, you cannot justify why extra/pre marital sex is bad. Or justify where it says so in a religion. NO ONE HAS SHOWN OR PROVEN THIS TO ME.

^Exactly my point. If I don’t follow the religion, am I still bound by other religious codes or laws(I forget the proper term)

The thing with the whole religious argument…I mean, last time I checked we had separation of church and state. And that religious ideals should not be imposed onto others. I don’t want to get sidetracked…but just saying.

I’m not a Christian. I am a very religious, theistic, Unitarian Universalist. I am also gay and could not get married in this state even if I wanted to or was old enough to. However, while I respect other people’s choices on the topic, pre-committed relationship sex just isn’t something I’m interested in. Sex without love to me just isn’t something I would want. I don’t think marriage necessarily is what I need, or that anyone else needs to feel the same way I do, but that’s just my two cents’ worth.

I said marriage is a flawed institution. Though given the fluidity of divorces nowadays as opposed to centuries ago it’s role for security has faded. As it is not something modern, its modern role can’t really be used to determine its original purpose.

^Okay. So then why did you make that statement if you realized it’s flawed? You basically are agreeing with me.

I was answering MIThopeful:

So, MIT, there’s your religious text. Hebrews 13:4.

I can’t speak for the others, but I at least have never have and never will suggest that the government ban extramarital sex. We’re talking about whether it is wrong, not whether it should be illegal.

No no no. That’s the thing. Marriage, historically was NOT a religious institution. To the years before Christianity, it was started so that families could be kept together basically. It was like to claim someone… as in… hey I’m married to this person, he/she’s off limits and only I get to start a family with that person.

Something like that, don’t quote me, and go ahead and correct me if I’m wrong. My source - I read it somewhere a while back.

I’m just wikipedia-ing it right now (not sure how many of you guys trust wikipedia), but there’s no mention of marriage coming as a result of religion.

^^Do you think not believing in God is wrong?

^ God is Love :)

Well I did receive my answer. So I can believe it now.

God IS love. That doesn’t mean not believing in God is wrong. God loves you whether or not you believe in her/him, because God is wonderful like that. It’s up to you to believe what you believe.

^I’m not asking if you think God is love.

And this was directed @MosbyMarion, but of course anyone can answer.

Yes, I do.

^Hm. How is it “wrong?”

Are you for teaching abstinence-only to students?

^ Because god does in fact exist, and he created the world, and he loves us, and he sent his son to die for us. Denying his existence after all that would be wrong.

And yes, though more on practical grounds than religious grounds. Actually, I think the school system shouldn’t even be involved in that area, which I think is the parents’ responsibility.

^To your first point: But God’s existence is not fact (we shouldn’t get into this here, but this is widely accepted, I think). So you could be wrong, could you not? So do deny evolution?

Second point: What about parents that aren’t responsible enough to deal with that? School is about education, and this is one part. Not teaching about contraceptives (safe sex) is naive and ineffective: kids will have sex, no matter what.

HA!
You crack me up, sir.
