Premed Forum FAQs: Read First

Thanks, folks! That’s good info to know.

My friend’s D who is in 4th year of BS/MD at NYU is now thinking of applying to MD/PhD.

For the more ignorant readers, could u guys add a time line sth like this:
1.high school 2.premed 3.med school … I m not sure where MCAT fits in. After undergraduation? What degree programs fall under med school (MD? what else?) and when exactly do u start practising ? Directly after med school? Or are there any further degrees?
Any replies would be tremendously helpful.

Four years in high school
Four years in college; sometime during your third year, you take the MCAT
Four years in medical school; at this graduation you are referred to as an MD but will not yet be treating patients unsupervised (“practicing”)
Three to seven years in residency
Zero to two or three years in fellowship

After this time, you are a practicing physician.

So a minimum of 10 years. Thanks that was extrememly helpful.
Suppose you don’t want to be a practising physician and instead choose medical reasearch …do u still have to complete residency and fellowship?

(Is there a website with a Medical school FAQ?)

Whoa, great post. Thanks for taking the time for linking these and putting them all together.

why not just get a PhD then? The vast majority of people doing medical research are PhD’s. However, if you feld the need to get an MD as well… most states require you to at least complete an internship (one year) after graduating to become licensed as a physician. I guess you wouldn’t have to do this if you didn’t want to - but you wouldn’t have a license, ability to get/prescribe meds, represent yourself as a physician, etc. You would just have the MD degree.

would me applying as an undeclared major or an less impacted major increase my chances to get into the undergrad school i want?

Goldshadow, YOu are soooo sweet!!!

if i want to prescribe medication to people who get migraines, what’s the specific name of the type of doctor? neurologist? would i have to help ppl who have alzheimers or other disorders or can i specialize in just this? will i be making close to the same amount of money?

also, what happens if u dont score so high on the MCATs? I’m kinda worried about going into med school, and im a senior in high school. so i kinda have to decide now. im not the kid who got above a 2000 on the SATs and im most likely not gonna be the college student who gets close to a perfect on the MCATs. i got an 1850 on my SATs after getting a 1550 the first time. should i consider a diff career path? ppl say that like very few get into med school…is that true? help…!

Ok so I’m majoring in Microbiology at Cal Poly SLO. I’m a freshman, two weeks into fall quarter. Winter quarter for the four year plan they have me take calculus 1. I already waived this course due to my passing of the AP calc AB exam. So according to my major I am done. But then I know you have to play the game with medical schools. I’m happy with just looking into Wayne state or a podiatry school or if I really ended with an awesome pre-med application maybe U of Mich. None of these places require calculus. Maybe just some statistics or computer science. So at this point can I just be done with calculus forever or would it be best to take at least one college calculus course? And if so, should I take a course in calculus 1 again or calculus 2? Keep in mind that I am going to impacted, 5-year graduation average :frowning: Cal Poly. So if I really don’t have to keep taking calculus…I don’t wanna!!!

You should not even think of deciding now. Go to college and do a broad first year. See what you like.
Unfortunately, grades and MCATs are probably more important for getting into medical school than grades and SATs are for undergrad.

But. First see what you like and then decide

Good job! I will be sure to keep this in mind.

Most of the links dont work

Why do none of the links work anymore?
