I see how many have different point of views of preps, hippies etc… Though just because one wears AE, Hollister etc… ( stores I like) they are known as wanna be preps? Absolutely not. That is just a ridiculous statement.

Sorry, I should have qualified my statement better. No, wearing those clothes does not make you a “wannabe prep”…but if you wear those clothes to look preppy, but aren’t, then you are a wannabe prep. I knew a lot of people who wore AE and Hollister in high school just so they could look preppy, but in actuality their personalities weren’t preppy at all. That’s why I called them wannabe preps-they dressed for the part, but don’t act for it.

That was a terrible example for “low-class preppy”. All it shows is Kendra in a generic blouse. Seeing as that blouse was the only clothing article in the picture, think of all the people you just called “low-class” (and PREPPY?). I guess my whole town of females is now “low-class preppy”.

Lame: laurenlolol

…and preppy still has nothing to do with brands.

A&F, AE, Hollister, etc. are not preppy brands. Prep is more than a clothing style. It depends on where you live, what type of school you go to, where you summer, etc. and nearly all preps live in the northeast.

People in public school believe preps are trashy whores who wear A&F and Hollister and think they’re the ****.

Hippies = people who don’t care about labeling themselves as “hippies” vs. “preps.”

this thread makes me want to bash my head into a wall.

Do we really still label people as “hippies” and “preps”? Are we 7th graders?

ditto!

^^ I believe the creator of this thread is still in high school—which explains a lot.

^ I know. I don’t get why people cared so much about that stuff. The less everyone thinks about it, the less it matters. End.
Same goes for the whole underlying “I’m a 4, but I wish I could get a 10” stuff that people here keep talking about, yet they have no real control over. Maybe if some of these people actually moved on with their lives more than talking about it, it wouldn’t matter so much. Or about how much easier or harder it is to be hot, ugly or whatever.
Maybe someone should make a “Do looks matter?” thread and call it a day. Seriously, everyone’s concerns can be lumped into that thread and we can all have “debates” about it. I mean, I think it matters, but not the way everyone here is all uptight and anxious about it.

To post 46

There are some people who see themself/ label others as a prep or hippie. It’s obvious as you read throughout this thread. I also don’t see one indentifying themself as a prep or hippie a issue, as your post seems to be implying.

To post 46-48

Whether or not my question matters much, I started a thread for it. One to make a big issue of this thread after it has long gotten replies is ridiculous.

Making an observation is creating a “big issue?”

You’re in high school, if I recall correctly, so it makes sense why you made this thread.

And your reaction is also something I’d expect from someone of your approximate age.
Seems basic enough.

LOL at age elitism.

Especially coming from a college student.

Damn. Who told you my secret?

woo!
Go Preps!

Preps > Hippies

These categories usually refer to lifestyle rather than appearance, or fashion.

I consider myself a prep because, I went to a Prep school, I come from money, and I am strong academically. I do wear Ralph Lauren and Lacoste, but that alone will not make you a prep.

This isn’t true at all. I’d be willing to wager that there are just as many preps who live in the Southeastern US.

Cuse, if you’re talking about public school prep then maybe you’re right.
Even if you wear the clothes, you have to live the lifestyle as well which means being a WASP, going to a prep school, sailing, and summering on Martha’s Vineyard.

By public school you mean public high school or public university?

The southern version of prep is either private or very good public high school, boating (not sailing), spending the summers at your beach house on the coast (NC, SC, or GA), country club, debutante functions, golfing, etc. Very much intertwined with the “old money” idea down here. As for college, public or private doesn’t matter…lots of the public schools down here have an extensive greek system which keeps these people together.

Preppybich-

You post shouldn’t even garner a response from me, but I will say this: People consider me to hold “hippie” (aka liberal) ideals, and I am just as strong academically as the preps at my school, if not stronger.

Anyway, this thread should be obliterated for various reasons, but I do enjoy reading some of the stupidity.

preppybich, I’m considered a “hippie” by a lot of people but I am at the top of my class and have money…I’m not rich but I’m not poor. To me, people who gloat about being a prep and coming from money are fake. If wearing RL and Lacoste alone does not make you a prep, I suppose you have to have a snarky attitude as well.

Sorry for the really late response, folks. I just noticed this thread and couldn’t help myself

I play squash, sail competitively, wear a lot of J. Crew and Ralph Lauren and whatever, want to go to Hamilton, yet I love Phish more than I love sliced bread, own several Dead shirts, and have many friends who are wooks and smoke their brains out but are some of the most intelligent and kindest people I know. Being a real prep is based on what you do far more than what you wear. Same with being a hippie.
Some of you guys should stop seeing things so superficially, and I highly doubt anyone will really get an understanding of what these two lifestyles are like based on what you find on google images.
Basically, you can find real dirty hippies, or wooks, during a summer music festival in the middle of nowhere, and you will find real preppy kids during Manhassett Race week.
Based on life experiences, I noticed that preppy kids and hippie kids seem to live hand in hand, and their lifestyles seem to co-relate in many odd ways.
All the people here who say “preppy>hippie” or vice-versa bother me tremendously, but that’s just me.
