Prescreen Release of Vocal Major?

Hello, waiting for updates has been both boring and stressful. I’ve applied for undergraduate voice programs at the following schools:

  • Juilliard
  • Eastman
  • New England Conservatory
  • Northwestern
  • Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)
  • University of Michigan

None of them has provided feedback on the prescreening results yet, and their websites don’t clearly state when decisions will be released.

Does anyone have insights from past experience? Do these schools inform you if you don’t pass the prescreening?

I’m trying to plan my travel, but it’s impossible without confirmation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

By my 3 music kids’ experiences, most prescreen results came in the last half of December. We’re just entering that time frame. Hopefully that means your wait is nearly over:).

I don’t believe my S22 had any prescreen results at this point in Dec yet- they were more toward the end of Dec into January and I remember CMU being the latest of all of them.

Toi Toi Toi! Try to breathe- it’s a stressful time but it will be behind you soon enough!

We are also waiting on Juilliard, Eastman, and CMU. Nothing yet…

The only one we have heard back from so far is UNT.

Don’t worry – it’s too early! My son applied to three of these and not one arrived before 12/20 if I remember correctly. Juilliard does it by instrument/voice, and ours were not out until second week of January.

My second year VP daughter received her prescreen passes from CMU on 1/11/23 and from Northwestern on 1/4/23.

We are also waiting on Juilliard, Rice, CIM, and Colburn. Heard back from only BU so far!

Happy New Year everybody! Just a quick update:

Juilliard - still waiting
Eastman - pass
New England Conservatory - pass
Northwestern - pass
Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) - still waiting
University of Michigan - pass

Very excited about the audition season! Wish everybody best luck in 2025!

Also still waiting on Juilliard and CMU. They are our last two :crossed_fingers:

Has anyone heard from either Curtis or University of Cincinnati - CCM? Still waiting on those.

Clara30 - we are also waiting on Juilliard and CMU.

(FYI: D has passed prescreens for Northwestern, USC, UCLA, UoMD-CollegePark, Ithaca.)

We heard from CMU that they’ll be releasing prescreening results sometime between January 10-15.

Just a generalization, but Curtis tends to extend audition invitations about one month prior to the audition date for each studio.
(I have a current student there)

Can confirm the accuracy of this! Curtis notifies about one month before or so. And since they have a later application date, basically nothing ever comes out until early January at the absolute earliest.

Does Yale need audition? I’m confused

What do you mean?

Yale’s music program is grad only and it is tuition free like Curtis, so yes, they do prescreens and multiple days of live auditions. It’s very competitive.

Got it! You are auditioning grduate school, I’m applying their music department undergraduate. Kind of disappointed that they do not hold audition for undergraduates

We heard back from CMU today for my daughter (undergrad VP major - mezzo soprano)

So, our tally so far:

UNT - pass
IU Jacobs - pass
Oberlin - pass
CIM - pass
Eastman - pass
CMU - pass
Juilliard - still waiting

Ah, I understand now. Yes, for undergrad they have music classes and you can take lessons, but they don’t hold auditions because you can’t get an undergrad music degree. But if you attend Yale and take lessons/join ensembles, that could give you a leg up to get into the masters program which is HUGE!
