Preserving Texas Residency for Med School

Our dd graduates college in May 2026. She is hoping to apply to med school in 2026 with the goal of beginning fall 2027. Her preference is to go to med school in Texas.

She was born and raised in Texas, and we still live here. However, she went to school OOS and is considering staying in that state until beginning med school in 2027. How would this affect her Texas residency?

Looks like it might matter based on if they’re a dependent or not for tax purposes.

You might review this and run scenarios by a school for clearer guidance.

This is for admit, not tuition purposes, it notes.

Definitely cleaner if she lived home.

Good luck.

Thank you!

@texaspg your thoughts?

Texas looks for residency at the time of the application - i.e., at graduation, when filing the app she will be a resident.

I am not certain she needs to affirm her residency once she gets in.

I can check with someone who is reapplying a second time and has a couple of admissions in this cycle. He has been continuing research at his OOS school for the 3rd year.

That would be great! Thank you!

This is the response I got.

As long as you maintain a TX driver’s license, and permanent residence in the state, you’ll be fine. Source: I called, and indicated this on my TMDSAS application and was classified IS!
