A brilliant, touching and funny remberance from Maureen Dowd. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/02/opinion/george-hw-bush-maureen-dowd.html
@rickle, i have no doubt many find it hard to believe the Ginsburg and Scalia were very good friends
It was a beautifully designed and delivered service that really reflected the man. I loved the hymns: great selection. (For All The Saints was reportedly Winston Churchill’s favorite hymn, and it is so inspiring. Thank you, Ralph Vaughn Williams!) The eulogies were indeed exceptional.
I missed the beginning, unfortunately.
@dadoftwingirls yes their friendship is a great story! Have seen many interviews about that including the two of them on camera at the same time. Makes me smile just thinking about their mutual respect for one another.
The US military isn’t bad at it, either. And this funeral had both elements.
The only “bad” funerals of any denomination I have ever been to were all about the religion, not the person.
I was surprised by the musical solos, given that it was indeed Episcopalian and presumably had access to the great English choral tradition. I found some of them cringe-worthy, personally, but that’s my taste. Presumably they were meaningful to the deceased and his family, which is what matters.
Well, Consolation. Hopefully at YOUR funeral there will be nothing cringe-worthy.
I didn’t notice the music. I was too busy cringing at the visible tension in the “former presidents and first ladies” row.
I would assume he had considerable input into the funeral planning and did so without my opinion on the music. Which is as it should be.
As I said, what matters is that it was meaningful to him and his family.
And don’t worry, @MomofWildChild .Since my Stage 4 cancer diagnosis I actually have spent some time thinking about my memorial service, although I hope it doesn’t happen any time soon. How sweet of you to be concerned.
I’m glad I’m able to appreciate the beauty and sacredness of the sacraments without having to seek out the negative in everything, whether it be a royal wedding or a President’s funeral.
My dad was a huge Oak Ridge Boys, he passed away almost 6 years ago. I thought their amazing grace was really nice.
I found the music at the funeral really nice. I grew up catholic and to me, I thought the music selections to be very traditional and showed the time and faith of President Bush. I’m sure it was music he heard and grew up with and sung when he went to services. That’s what they said to me at least. They touched me.
I really don’t want to wade into a disagreement. Just stating my opinion
I have heard that once a new President is elected, there is a person who sole job is to plan that President’s funeral for when the time comes.
First story hints at the planning.

Second story does a better job of explaining it.
