Presidential Scholarship and When do they notify you.

Okay my DS has applied to USC by the Dec. 1 deadline and he is a National Hispanic Scholar (NHS) under the NHRP. We have a few questions:

Based on a phone call with admissions, it is our understanding that as a NHS, he would be eligible for a presidential scholarship of 50%. Is that scholarship automatically awarded for his NHS standing?

If not automatic, then what are the criteria for the award?

Would he be notified of the Presidential Scholarship with the admissions decision? If not, then when would he be notified?

Also if a student applies by Dec. 1, when would they receive their admission’s decision for USC?

Thank you for your help. We have searched this website and can’t find any answers to these questions.

1) If the NHS Presidential is awarded the same way as the NMS Presidential, then it is automatic IF you are accepted, reach NHS status, and name USC as your first-choice school. [USC Financial Aid - Grants & Scholarships - Undergraduate - Freshmen Only Scholarships](http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/grants_scholarships/undergraduates/meritbasedfo.html) The scholarship description does not specifically mention the NHS, but *your conversation with admissions *suggest that they are handled in the same manner.

2) Criteria as above.

3) No, you would not be notified with your admissions. From past admissions cycles, NMS 1/2 Presidential scholarship notifications arrive in April - after the deadline to name your first-choice school.

4) The general mailing of acceptances can be found in post #10 of the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/422566-faq-usc-admissions.html</a> thread.

Good luck!

NHS is not the same as NMF, its not automatic 50%.

High GPA, high Test Scores, ECs…the usual.

If you are invited to interview for Presidential or Trustee, you will receive the invitation in January.

It depends, USC sends out acceptances all the way from January until the beginning of April.

"after the deadline to name your first-choice school. "
the above is NOT CORRECT. Students have until mid May to designate which college is their “first choice”

Thanks, menloparkmom - do you know if there is any need to have “undecided” as the first choice prior to May, or is it okay to have another school as first choice until then?

A student can change their mind up until the May deadline, but the BEST course of action is NOT to send in their card listing their final choice until they know where they will be going to college in Sept.
