"Prestige" of Indiana-Bloomington?

I take that back. We do have a Cornell guy. He’s bright. No other Ivy grads that I’m aware of, however.

Then guess.

@wayneandgarth:

You’re either from the Northeast or young (under 30).

Answers please.

UW’s prestige is not being overrated here – it’s the third-most prestigious school un the B1G for undergrad, or tied with Illinois for third. And might be #1 or #2 in overall PhD strength.

According to the Graduate Programs web site, Big Ten schools ranked among the top Anthropology grad programs are:

2 Michigan

3 Wisconsin

4 Illinois

5 Northwestern

Farther down the list we find:

18 Minnesota

19 Penn State

20 Michigan State

Minnesota - in my 50’s. Nice try. Most impressive guy I work with - MIT guy; next most impressive - Wharton guy. It’s amazing that us flyover landers can appreciate, or even heard of, a good school.

Nebraska is a fine academic institution.

Most people think the “N” on the Nebraska football helmet stands for Nebraska. That is incorrect.

It stands for “Nowledge”.

@wayneandgarth:

There are definitely some impressive people from MIT and Wharton. Some of them came from my high school.

Most of us flyover landers care more about what an individual can do and has done than the school they went to, however, and aren’t snobs stuck up about prestige. I concede that there are exceptions.

I could care less myself what school they went to. These just happen to be the most impressive people at my office.

Yes they are ‘ranked’ quite differently. Where undergrad unofficial lists like US News uses selectivity, class size, graduation and retention rates, endowment, alumni giving, and more…

Graduate school is done by department, not overall ranking. Grad ranking is almost entirely done on the basis of publication production and general peer regard of academics in each department.

Sorry some people are trying to have an off topic sub-conversation in your thread, but you opened a can of worms by a poorly worded/focused question.

^ yeah, it’s obvious that “prestige” doesn’t have a universal meaning, but I wasn’t expecting it to. This thread is great!
