Princeton Class or 2021 EA / RD Application thread

Do you guys think Princeton weighs the interviews as heavily as Harvard does?

@laughingcow10 - neither Princeton NOR Harvard weighs interviews much

Anyone willing to weigh my chances? XD Kinda nervous, good luck to everyone!

Out of all of my college interviews, my Princeton and Harvard ones seemed the most insignificant. Both interviewers were nice, but didn’t think the interview was important and only planned for 30 minutes.

My Princeton interview was nearly three hours long dang I wish they weighed it more heavily haha

@y90y90 Really? I had the complete opposite experience. My Harvard interview lasted a little over 3 hours, and then I had a follow up interview in the beginning of March with my regional admissions officer. My Princeton interview last about an hour because there were people after me, but we exchanged quite of a few emails afterwards answering more questions. Perhaps it is just the personality of the interviewer.

my Harvard interview wasn’t particularly long, but it went super super well; my Princeton interview went well, but it was a phone interview and didn’t seem very important.

My Columbia interview was a 30 minute scheduled (and a little off kilter) but my Princeton interview was an hour and very relaxed. Still, I can’t imagine it weighs heavily.

3 more days

My princeton interview was about 2.5 hours. I wish they were weighted more heavily as well. From what I’ve heard it is more of a “fit” evaluation. As I was told by my interviewer, students of Princeton are different from the students of Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Brown, etc…

Does anybody know the rate of deferred students that are ultimately admitted in RD? Sorry if this has been asked before…

@seaotter17 i’m not sure if anyone 100% knows, i’ve heard that deferred students have a better chance and that they have a poorer chance of being admitted. If anyone else reading this has a better idea, please shed some light on this

My Princeton interview went on for only about 20 minutes. Should I be worried? It was a pleasent conversation tho.

The rate changes from year to year, and even if you did have a number it doesn’t tell you much about an individual’s probability of acceptance once deferred due to the variability in deciding who gets off the waitlist. Let me explain. Princeton, like many other schools are likely to use the waitlist to meet “institutional needs” –i.e., to make up for deficiencies in the class that has enrolled so far. In other words, if the class seems short on males or females, on members of particular minority groups, on students from the Northwest or Southeast, on science majors, swimmers or soccer goalies, etc., then those students may be the first to be selected from the waitlist. Priority may also be given to children of prominent alumni or other VIP’s (who have been creating a stir with friends in high places since the decision letters went out). So, if you’re on a waitlist but don’t think you fill a particular niche (i.e., if you’re a middle or upper-middle-class white kid from an overrepresented part of the country with a common choice of major and no unique talents), then you may not be one of the first selected. But if you’re not applying for financial aid, that can be a plus … especially at colleges that are not as “rich” as the Ivies and other “elite” schools. Conversely, if you need a lot of financial aid, that might hurt you. (Even colleges that that claim to be “need blind” may not be when it’s time to choose from the waitlist.) Hope that helps.

makes sense thanks  @justonepita

Accepted at Michigan (Ross School of Business). Excepting a no from Princeton and maybe UPenn Wharton.

@justonepita - what you have written is about waitlist. Not EA / ED deferral. EA / ED deferral applicants are re-evaluated during RD, just like they would have been if they applied RD.
@seaotter17 - I am not sure what Princeton’s EA deferral : RD rate is, but I believe Harvard’s is 2.3%

@MedSciBud Yup, you’re right. My bad haha got ahead of myself

what @justonepita said makes a lot of sense though in regards to who will be admitted or not from the deferred applicant pool - it depends whether you have something the rd pool was lacking so the acceptance probably isnt too consistent

@MissAnthropy To answer your original question, the admissions committee will definitely know, and will likely put into consideration, whether someone was an early applicant. Despite what people may say, it just makes sense that applying early (especially limiting oneself to one EA school, as Princeton) shows one’s dedication to that particular school. That said, this is clearly a very tiny factor; the application is still going to be the deal maker (or breaker).
