There’s a CC poster who’s a private college counselor in Chicago, but she also works via phone, email and skype. Her CC moniker is Hanna, and it’s also her actual name. I’d suggest you do a search for her here and then PM her.
I would say that whether you use a consultant or CC depends on how your child feels about you, his or her parent, being his or her sounding board and guide in this process. DS’ college counselor (at his school) had credibility with him that we did not, and he trusted her with more personal information, including his essays, than he did us. If it’s the right person, being outside the family can be really valuable. Going away to college can be a huge step in developing independence which can also make parental involvement very confusing. The counselor’s role, btw, was to help him figure out what he wanted, where there might be a fit, and how to present himself. She did not play a role in “grooming” him to be a certain type of applicant.
