My kids have had chronic mono off & on now for several years, so while it wasn’t as dramatic as SAX, it has not been kind to them either. I had mono, which kept me in the infirmary back in the stone age & I recovered sufficiently to fly from CA to MI, where I recooperated over Christmas break while visiting my sister. It was somewhat like a bad “bug” for me that knocked me down a just a few days.

Just got the lab results back, and, no surprise, it is mono after all. He is on his way home now. Just hope it is relatively mild, in the scheme of things.

Thanks everyone. Yes, the hair loss was a cruel unexpected addition. She had also had the 2nd garasil shot around this time and apparently some people complain of hair loss/balding with this. So we did not know if it was going to grow back or not. Many a dark day here in our home.

The positive part is that this young lady now feels that she can handle whatever life throws at her.

Nice that you get to have him home, momoschki! Enjoy babying him :)

Sax,
Yes, when our kids have unexpectedly large BUMPS along the road, we all become a bit more resiliant and confident about handling othe big things we may encounter down the path.

Best of luck, Momoschki!

sunnyflorida; Nice!

S is home-- miserable and acting mean. His throat is so sore he can barely eat. He did get some pleasure, however, out of insisting on showing me his tonsil, roughly the size of a golf ball.

So sad: he was so looking forward to being back at school with all his friends again and H and I had been planning on going away this week.

You must tell your son that since he is contagious he must stay in bed and in his room (slight lol). This will contain his misery.
Have him gargle with salt water - it is gross but really works. it will shrink the tonsil and kill germs.

I have had two kids who had mono - you will survive and so will he ![]()
Good luck!

Take him to you doctor at home. The sore throat from hell hit my daughter hard and she had to be put on prednisone. She had great relief within 24 hours. She was also given tylenol with codeine to ease the pain for the first day or two.

same here…

My daughter was also helped very much by one of those small “dose packs” of prednisone. She got mono just after she had recovered from swine flu. She was tired for a week or two, but not as dramatically as we feared she would be.

I had mono last year and had literally no symptoms for the first month or two except the most swollen glands my doc had ever seen. One of my glands was like three inches across, it scared the hell out of my mom. Then like three months in I was so exhausted that I would get in the car to drive to school, buckle my seatbelt, and wake up three hours later still in the driveway. That lasted like three months. However, the exhaustion and the swollen glands were the only symptoms I ever had.

Thanks for all your responses. If he is unimproved tomorrow, I will drag him to the doctor in hope of some (at least temporary) relief. He is ordinarily such an energetic person, so it is really depressing to see him like this…
