The check engine light came on my Volvo all the time. Drove me NUTS! Replaced all sorts of valves, but the thing that cured it was replacing the O2 sensors. You can’t get the car to pass the smog test without fixing the check engine light problem (so can’t sell it). But if you are going to junk the car after graduation, then drive it for the 6 weeks until graduation.

GladGradDad–I’m not sure if that was EXACTLY what was wrong, but he said it was something to do with the fuel vapors.

I’m not sure what they’re going to do with it after I graduate, but I do know there’s no way I can take it with me to Indiana (if that’s where I end up; still waiting to hear back from them).

A PCV valve for that car is under $10. Installation should be straightforward. $400 sounds high, unless there are other issues that require attention. It’s not an urgent repair, though it should be done at some point.
