Problems with transferring high schools [TX 9th/10th -> NC 11th/12th]

At our NJ school, 4 years of PE are mandatory (state law), no online classes, no summer classes, no opt out for varsity (or any) sports, daily.

I grew up with that too (although athletes could use the ‘3 sports’ to qualify for a PE credit), but my kids had many more options in Cal and Fla. Covid changed a lot of definitions of what schools can do to help kids qualify and they were pre-covid kids. Fla actually has a rule that a student has to take one virtual class, so one daughter took the PE class and I don’t remember what the other did, but #2 was an athlete so was always working out or practicing or playing so something qualified her.

Their hs in Cal had a ‘zero period’ which started at like 6:30 am, and many kids took a class like PE at that time to get to take more academic classes later, or took a Zero class just to get out of school earlier and go to a job.

You might be able to take PE through NC VPS or in summer school if you can’t get that TX class to transfer. That would free up your schedule for next year.

Thank you for the detailed response and your advice. I think my counselor was trying to match the classes taken at my old school to classes at my new school, but they don’t have a lot of similarities. A dual credit art class I took is listed as a visual arts elective, when it would be better matched to AP Art History. But my new school district doesn’t have an art history class, so I guess they can’t list it on my new transcript. I don’t know if there is a fix for problems like that, but I sent my counselor my community college transcript. Maybe that might fix some of the changes, but I’m not sure.

I’m planning on meeting with my counselor so that she can get to know me and my situation better. Hopefully she can address everything adequately in her LOR.

And remember, you will send all three transcripts with your application. Admission officers DO look at the details of the transcripts.

Thank you. I’ll ask her about that if I don’t figure out the PE credit thing.

I am in NC and a lot of students at my kids’ charter high school took classes from NCVPS so your counselor is probably pretty familiar with it.

How they map from the old school to the current school only really matters for your current school’s graduation requirements. For the purpose of college applications, you send transcripts or self-report each school’s courses and grades from that school, not as they are listed by your current school for transfer credit.

Again, college admissions officers have dealt with kids transferring high schools time and time again. They will know how to handle your situation. Yes, understand the process your new HS uses, but then move on. Take any classes needed for HS graduation. But also focus on finding new friends, seeking out ECs of interest, etc.

The silver lining (?) is that NC has some outstanding public universities you can apply to down the road.
