Prom dresses - when to buy?

oh heck. She got asked at last moment (is new to the school) and I just want to spoil her so spent ridiculously much on Saks website. Should get here in a day or so. Fingers are crossed that it fits and makes her happy. She deserves it. A difficult year.

BCBG outlets have racks of dresses for $49-$99, My D’s dress last year was $49, marked down from over $300 as it was last years and the last dress. This year we started early as she is a senior and I thought we might have to shop around. Found the perfect dress again for $69 (originally $350) and a graduation dress for $29 (was $225). Both fit without alterations and she had several to choose from.

My D showed me a website where you can rent a designer prom dress for (obviously) much less than its purchase price. You can keep the dresses for a week or so. Rental prices for pretty dresses started at $40-$50. She’s not attending the prom this year, however, so I didn’t make a note of the web address. Last year she did go, in a lovely purple number that we found for $25 at the church rummage sale, “Divine Consign.”

If your daughter is as picky as mine, you should have started in January! (JK, but only sort-of.) I think you should look asap, as shops sometimes keep a record of who bought what dress and then will not sell that dress to another girl attending that same prom. I guess this works out where I live because dress shops rarely carry the identical brands or designs. Also, if you want to order a dress that is not on the rack, it might take several weeks. Then there is the alteration line-up. Yeah, start now.

My daughter is done with this stuff, but I actually have fond memories of dress shopping with her. Enjoy! :)

For our D, she is very petite & we have to shop once she had decided she was going to attend & had the stamina to do so. As it was, there was only ONE dress out of both shopping malls that fit her properly both of the years she wanted a prom gown. Fortunately, she looked fabulous in the dress & it was different for her JR year & SR year.

I agree, the sooner you shop, the greater the selection. Nordstrom’s Rack, Ross & many other places may have some good options as well. Even Salvation Army, vintage shops & other places sometimes have great gems. Good luck & happy shopping!

pam-b: I could have written your post…

we were in NC for orientation at Elon; BCBG outlet 20 minutes away; picked up prom dress (first one tried on) and graduation dress for a grand total of…$150…

It was worth the visit…
