Prop 30 - Will it have unintended consequences?

That’s exactly what Tiger said today. That he moved to Florida for tax purposes.

On a smaller scale, many, many retired NYC workers take their million dollar pensions and move to Florida after they retire, leaving the taxpayers on the hook for their pensions and lifetime medical but receiving no taxes in return. I hope with all my heart to be one of those nose-thumbers someday!

Of course, income tax rates are nowhere near 91%, and even when they were, there were plenty of ways to avoid paying anywhere near that high a rate.

“moral right” ? According to whose morals? Two very scary words right there…

lookingforward - Phil made 45 million and his tax rate in california seems to be 13.3%.
Assuming he has some deductions, excludes federal income taxes etc and his rate drops to 9% or so, he will still be paying 4-5 million.

He may not pay anything in Florida.

According to mine. If you earned it, it’s yours and gratitude and respect are due to those who earn it and pay the taxes that others spend with such entitlement.

So why aren’t there calls to abolish the biggest government entitlements of all, Social Security and Medicare?

The mistake Phil made was talking about it publicly. He is an easy target: A guy making $40mm++ playing golf, complaining about taxes??? But I don’t care how many billions you make, if your taxes suddenly go up, you notice, and if you want to do something about it (like moving) you do. If you are French you can move to Belgium, if you are Californian you can move to Az of FL.

I wasn’t sure what he exactly said and what he was complaining about. This article breaks it down pretty well and it appears that he wasn’t that far off, as in maybe not 60% but over 50%. I personally really don’t like marginal tax rates above 50%, because unless you eliminate deductions, at that point a dollar of deduction is worth more than a dollar earned which creates way too many uneconomic incentives.

truly confused katliamom, are you suggesting that there is a moral code espousing that other parties have rights to someone else’s earnings?

Also, the tax rate he is complaining about is incorrect; see post #5.

“If you earned it, it’s yours and gratitude and respect are due to those who earn it and pay the taxes that others spend with such entitlement.”

Yes, this is about paying taxes. If you consider building roads and schools entitlement then your ‘moral right’ doesn’t seem so moral to me.

“truly confused katliamom, are you suggesting that there is a moral code espousing that other parties have rights to someone else’s earnings?” I’m suggesting “morals” are as fluid as humanity itself. I certainly wouldn’t want some people’s morals applied to my life.

So, UCB, why care? If he’s not important and if his opinion is “wrong,” then california will be better off without him. Right?

Him and all those other complainers. Just let them go. who needs 'em?

Mine, shared by many Republicans. Democrats’ policies are also shaped by their moral views – they think that beyond a certain point, inequality of income and wealth is immoral. The debate over whose morals are “right” will not be resolved on CC or elsewhere.

“The debate over whose morals are “right” will not be resolved on CC or elsewhere.”

True! So why even bring it up???

Each person has the right to decide if the cost of certain things is worth paying or not. If you don’t like the cost, look at the ways to get out of paying it. If it’s worth it, you’ve got your course of option. There are those who give up citizenship in certain countries because the cost was too high to them. It’s up to each person to decide what actions to take. CA will be in trouble if there is enough of a mass exodus that those left will not generate enough money to make the increase worthwhile. Always a risk when you raise the price on something.

I don’t know why this is surprising. People will always act in their own self-interest. California is on the brink of killing the geese that lay the golden eggs.

Even if you think taxes in California needed to rise, the illegal lobbying by the state universities was troubling:

[CSU bold in illegal Prop. 30 lobbying - Dan Walters - fresnobee.com](http://www.fresnobee.com/2012/10/29/3047754/csu-bold-in-illegal-prop-30-lobbying.html)

I didn’t say one shouldn’t pay taxes Katliamom, did I? I said gratitude and respect should be given to those who earn and pay, didn’t I? Gratitude and respect are immoral to you?

No, it’s not about “gratitude.” It’s not out of “gratitude” that we pay taxes - we pay taxes because they are part of the social compact that allows for a functioning civil society.

Your “property” exists only because there’s a functioning government which records what you own and will, by law, enforce your right to possess that property. Otherwise, your next-door neighbors could walk over with a shotgun and tell you that your house is now theirs, and if you don’t like it, go pound sand. Call the police? What police? This is Ayn Rand Fantasyland, there are no police. The private security guards you hired? Oh, well, your next-door neighbor paid them more. Courts? What are those? Gee, life is great without taxes!

If you want to stop paying taxes, by all means move to Somalia. Just don’t complain when the ship with all your stuff on it gets hijacked by pirates.

Why Somalia? There are plenty of lot more civilized countries with much lower rates. US is not the only country where a truly rich person can live.

The FB guy moved to Singapore.

Polarscribe, don’t put words in my keyboard. That is dishonest and sleazy. Nowhere did I say that I didn’t want to pay taxes. The question is how much of one’s income can be taken “morally” and with what attitude.

You find gratitude and respect immoral. I don’t.
