Property Taxes

Yes, the insurance inspectors work with the property manager and usually tattle to us about things that the tenants are doing/hanging around the property that are risks. We convey to the property manager who promptly has it corrected. Of course the property manager isn’t able to see and correct things as soon as they occur, since he’s managing a lot of other places.

We appealed taxes once and property inspector came by but we had an appointment.

I’ve read where drones are being used to do property surveys for insurance and tax purposes. Sure to be legal challenges if there aren’t already over this.

There are lots of aerial photos via GIS surveying. You don’t need a drone. I knew a builidng inspector who always read the real estate listings to see what was advertised that didn’t have a permit. Lots of finished attics without sprinklers!

Lots of controversy about sprinklers also.

I tried (unsuccessfully) to reduce our property taxes once, at an open session the county once offered every 6 or so years. I had comps in the nearest neighborhood since nothing similar had sold in my own neighborhood for many years. I also showed larger homes than mine, in my immediate area, that were valued less. All the data was ignored by auditor rep. They even increased my value slightly the next time (seemed like ‘payback’ to me). I went up to the next level and was told my house “could” potentially be worth more if I tried to sell. What they based that evaluation on was a mystery. it is supposed to be based on comps that actually HAVE sold. Decided to quit fighting city hall. It finally went down last year (although nearby property values were rising), so perhaps someone finally evaluated correctly.
