We got rid of the landline when we moved to House2. We wanted to keep it, but the phone company said we had to get a new number… just not worth it. Throw in an interesting wrinkle down a few months - our insurance insisted that we needed to have a “hard-wired” (landline) security system. Uhh… no. I called our agent and asked what century we were in. After watching the Comcast dude trying to find where the blasted cable runs, I have confidence that burglars will have a much harder time trying to disable our cable internet than the stupid landline.
The phone companies are discontinuing the copper lines:
Well, at this time we still have copper wire landline AND have had our landline work when there have been power outages.
ditto.
no one is taking out my copper wire landline while I live in this house.
They don’t need to take the copper wire out of your house. They’ll just disable it at the street. Sorry.
My fax machine is probably older than your VCRs. I’ve got a mailbox place around the corner where I fax. Costs, but we rarely fax. Mostly can either e-sign or take a pic and email it back.
If you’re keeping the triple bundle, check that bundle pricing. I dropped Fios TV, changed to Sling. If you don’t know it, take a look. The net savings for us is about $800/year.
But I kept the LL cuz the internet service would be higher if I dropped the phone. Really. My kiddo just learned the same, didn’t even hook up her LL. Verizon.
Frankly, this is all too complicated and I mind how we need to be vigilant to avoid the cost creep.
@lookingforward - I hate the constant vigilance too. On my to-do-list for the week is the call to Verizon to find out how to get back the phony “discount” that expired last month.
Haven’t had a landline since 2010 and don’t miss it a bit.
We got rid of our landline last year. In addition to my cell, I have a google number which I absolutely love! I rarely give out my cell number.
SO it was time for me to redo my comcast account as the promo I have was expiring. I had the triple play b/c at the time it was the cheapest. I never ever used the phone #. Kept my landline separate. Now, the cheapest triple play package is a about $35/mo more than what I pay, but I can get the double play (same services but without the phone) for what I pay now. So, glad I never ported my phone. The cost is about a wash, but I do not want comcast to have my phone #…May eventually get rid of it. But not just yet.
That’s why I don’t use the phone service with my internet service provider. They have the discount for the first year then jump to high fee on the next year. I use Ooma, totally independent from any ISP. Only $4.30 per month now. I can also have multiple lines with Ooma with a small additional fee if I want to.
I played every tough gal card I could, with Verizon, to no avail. On one hand, bundling web with the phone seems an attempt to preserve their business. Otoh, not at the prices they insist on. Counterintuitive, as is much they do.
I still have a separate AOL account for actual web communications, but too many people and services have my email address- more than legitimately use my home phone number.
Okay. I’m officially sorry I gave up the fax service. Just found out that dentist office won’t send records with an emailed copy of their form. It either needs to be paper mailed or faxed to them. SIgh.
You can fax from a copy shop if you like for fairly low prices. I like being able to fax. That is a primary use of our landline.
Thanks all for the advice! Very helpful. Much appreciated
