You do need to get a certain SAT score to advance to Finalist, but your SAT score has no effect on whether or not you’ll get Semifinalist.

Really?

Awesome. Is there time to retake the SAT before that then?

Nvm, found out there is. Woo.

To MaryTN,
Congratulations on your child’s great score! He will very likely advance as long as he gets that required packet of information sent in on time. His score is even better than my D’s score of 224! I really pushed her to get that essay written immediately and she gave all of the required information back to her GC less than a week after she got the packet. I hope you son will look at Vanderbilt. They are the most generous of top tier schools for NMF-she gets $5K per year for that and also $5K per year for the Lottery and GMAS merit scholarship. They have also really come through for a lot of people with great financial aid packages that don’t involve loans. She moved in a week ago and loves being there even though her home is less than 20 minutes from campus!

But we haven’t heard anything from NMSQT.

She had a 214.

Last years cutoff was 215 here in Georgia, but since they said the SAT’s were down, it’s possible the PSAT cutoff went down by 1 point.

When do the Semi Finalists need to take SAT? My S took the SAT Test in March 2009, can he use that score (2290) to qualify for the Finalist status?

morningrain-
The PSAT that students take in October of their jr yr is what counts for the National merit score

Morningrain, yes, if he took the PSAT last fall as a junior, then his SAT in March of 2009 is fine.

morningrain: The SAT they consider must have been taken between October 2007 and December 2009. So if your child is named as a Semi-Finalist, March 2009 is fine. (great score BTW)

hope4freeride: We toured Vandy but it is not near the top of his list for a few reasons. The main one being that his major (Vocal Music Education) is a 5 year program. Yes, you end up with a Master’s but it means 5 years of Vandy tuition (and most scholarships are for 4). Blair is a very small school. 50 total incoming freshmen normally and that’s for ALL instruments and voices.

Matok, if you want to get out of the area try Arizona State, University of Tx or U of Florida (Gainesville), I understand they have given pretty good deals to NMS students in the past although it sounds like U of FL and UT have cutback from the really good deals they used to give.

Speaking of Colleges, does anyone know of a complete listing of colleges that give at least full tuition or more to NMS students? I think the NMS staff may provide a list of “Participating colleges” but many of them only give like $2,500 or so. For example Northwestern University in Illinois might give $2,500 per year. Better than nothing but NOT a full ride by any means (especially considering the full cost of Northwestern!)

Kidsatm,
I found this listing a while back, don’t know if it is current, but it is a start. It’s a link to schools that give full scholarships to NMF’s

is pretty up to date

Very helpful, thanks!

In the state where I live, it was announced that the average SAT score for the state dropped 9 points. Is it likely that the cutoff score for the state would also drop?

Steve1991 It might be helpful to the rest of us to know what state you live in - and do you mean whether the cutoff score for the PSAT might drop? I find it helpful for those posting here to mention what state they are referring to.

Steve1991–I don’t think it would have much impact because the stats being quoted are most likely for the class of 2009, because some in the class of 2010 are still taking their SAT’s; whereas the PSAT’s are all in for the class of 2010. So you’re not comparing apples to apples…make sense?

Steve, my state went down at least one point.

I do think the drop in SATs reported could also be reflected in last years PSAT. But the tests are different, and not knowing the cause for the drop it’s hard to say if the factors that led to lower SATs would also affect PSAT. Perhaps they just had poorly calibrated SATs.

That said, apparently, at least in Georgia, there was a drop in PSAT scores last year.
