<p>NY 227?? That sounds absolutely impossible because the cutoff score barely changes from year to year, and last year, NY’s was 216! I think one of the highest cutoffs last year was MA, and that was only 221.</p>
<p>Okay, LOL, now I’m actually starting to worry because I’m 222 from NY. Well, I’ll find out soon… good luck to everyone waiting!</p>
<p>nobody knows for sure, so the way the lists are being compiled is that the lowest score from each state is being posted. 227 is just the lower score someone has posted for ny so far. if you got less than that, dont worry yet.</p>

<p>^LOL, I hope joeschmidt’s not doing this as some kind of a joke. Cutoff score for NY has actually been on the decline over the past few years.</p>
<p>I don’t know if the fact that the commended score went up from 200 to 201 this year speaks to a big increase in one state, given that all the scores reported here so far have not seemed to go up by much? ? Just a thought.</p>
<p>Sorry, but I doubt there is any way NY went up 11 points this year! Puh-leeeease! There have been times when states have gone up 3-4 points in one year, but that is usually in smaller states where big fluctuations can happen. Besides, if New Yorkers were that smart, they’d move down south!</p>

<p>My daughter got a 218 in CA, and there was no asterisk by her score which supposedly meant she qualified (if you read the fine print on the test results). </p>
<p>Of course, now we’re wondering if that was just preliminary and not official.</p>

<p>There are three different pages describing various aspects.</p>
<p>Mrscollege, an asterisk means the student is not elligible for the National Merit competition for some reason, such as he/she took the test as a sophomore. If there is NO asterisk, that means only that the student is elligible. It is not an indication of whether the student will be a semifinalist. Packages were apparently mailed on August 25 to schools for each student who qualified as a semifinalist. Most of our kids are just waiting for their schools to hand them out! Someone in California posted that they qualified with a 219, so we know only that the California cutoff is less than or equal to 219.</p>
<p>Skyhook, thank you so much for that list and timetable from Carleton!! Just a point of clarification - the student can take the SAT anytime during the junior or senior year, up to and including Dec. of the senior year. I think the point of the Carleton timetable is, if you haven’t taken the SAT reasoning yet, or you want to try to increase your score, you must take it at either the Oct., Nov., or Dec. sitting.</p>
<p>emoney–how high (or “low”) your qualifying score is within the range of scores represented by semifinalists in your state is immaterial to whether you advance to finalist (my son just made the cutoff and received a National Merit Scholarship; it doesn’t matter how close you are to that cutoff. It’s essentially a “do-over” once you submit the paperwork to advance to be a finalist). Your high school should have a packet available for you any day if you make this year’s cutoff score for your state, and you just fill it out and submit your information through your school.</p>
