<p>Countingdown, I feel for you about the transposition error on the PSAT test. We were ourselves actually sweating a lot because my s had transposed two correct answers in the write-in math portion. He ended up with a 214 in Illinois and making it, but if he had missed it by 1 or 2, that error would have haunted us. My husband said though that organizational skills are a part of intelligence. My s is more of an absent-minded professor type already.</p>

<p>Not so, from the point of view of the applicant. You have more time than that to fill out the application. Remember, in some states school doesn’t even open until the day after Labor Day.</p>

<p>tomjonesistheman, though my state high school had already opened last week, I’m waiting to hear whether I’ve made it to semifinalist as well. Here’s the NMS requirement for last year; last year’s application deadline for student is Sep 12th, and the school deadline is Oct 10th, so I hope this year’s is a little later.</p>

<p>The number of semifinalists each state gets is based on the number of graduating seniors in the state, not the number of PSAT test takers. If a state has 5% of the nation’s graduating seniors, then that state gets 5% of the National Merit semifinalists. So, if many kids take the PSAT in that state, a smaller percentage of test takers make semifinalist. On the other hand, if a very small percentage of kids in a state take the PSAT, then a higher percentage of those test takers will be semifinalists.</p>

<p>edit: also, should i accept the lack of response as tacit acceptance that some people just overreacted to nothing for the sake of feeling morally indignant, and that there’s no point to talk about this anymore since all we care about is finding out about the psat cutoffs? i hope so…</p>
