Our D is an OOS and received the Provost Award which is $16,000 divided into four years and was told she would be considered for the Braddock Scholarship and the Honors Program scholaship. It all adds up so it helps especially with the hefty non resident price.
I was rejected summer and fall admission to university park for smeal business college but called on January 22nd to be reconsidered for DUS summer session.
Best SAT math and reading sitting score (penn state doesn’t look at writing): 1190
3.85 gpa
Good extra curriculars
Brother and sister both went there
I was told a week until I’d hear back about reconsideration but it’s been almost 2 so I called back today and they said it is going to be much longer
@jlhpsu I am in the same grade as your son and am also looking at state schools. Just curious, but where else is your son looking? Sorry, I know this is the wrong thread but didn’t know how else to ask!
@blueandwhite98 It’s always worth a phone call in my opinion. Can’t hurt you and if the answer is no, you are in no worse spot.
I’m going to call admissions tomorrow and ask to be reconsidered to summer session DUS even thought that’s what I originally applied for. is there a certain person I should ask to speak to? And will it make a difference that both my siblings went there and my dad lives in state college ( he does not work at the campus) as a doctor. Please let me know I don’t plan on attending a branch and I was dead set on Penn state.
Has anyone who applied before Nov.30 still waiting for the decision? I submitted my app on Nov.3rd and completed all the requiring materials before Nov.30, but my portal still shows “under review”.
@mmsharp Some of the people who have posted about UMD (including one on this thread) are Freshman Connection admits. You can google the details; like summer session for PSU, it is for students who have somewhat lower stats than regular fall admits.
@myacceptmy3 you can call, but reconsideration requires that something substantially change in your application, and you are changing nothing. Did you put on your application that you have siblings who attend Penn State? They do ask that. If you put that down, then they already know. That your father is a doctor in State College will not matter at all.
I know it’s difficult to accept a rejection and certainly if calling and asking for a change makes you feel like you’ve done everything you could, then go for it. But I think it’s an exercise in frustration and just puts admissions further behind…especially since you have also already emailed them about your denial. You said you were borderline for summer, so you know why you were denied. REALLY wanting to go to Penn State doesn’t matter as they assume everyone who applied wants to go there and they also state “level of interest” does not matter. You can call, but I don’t think you are going to get the answers you want.
@Elaine9806 I guess we’re two of the lucky ones. I submitted my app first week of Sept and everything was complete by the 3rd week. Since then, I have been sitting here waiting on my decision. Good luck to you!
Accepted to UP just now!
Thanks! Should we call them?
Accepted fall 2016 after being denied for Finance at Smeal University Park. I received a call straight from Penn State telling me that the program was VERY competitive and therefore could not offer admission but that if I switched my major or chose DUS I would be basically in.
My stats are really low so I was really surprised.

ACT: 18
GPA: 3.89
Essay: My best one yet
Recs: Great

My son was accepted after reconsideration DUS Summer.

Need to figure out the “downside” of DUS vs. entering under the major
DS accepted via portal on 1/30, but still no letter or packet or anything. Those accepted earlier, how long before you got something in the mail?
@acme I got accepted on a Friday and got the packet on the next Thursday so six days
@acme My D also accepted on the portal around 1/21. In the portal somewhere, she clicked and there was a letter of acceptance she was able to print out. Also, a downloadable “Guide for New Students Offered Admission.” Otherwise, nothing in snail mail.
@acme I got a packet like 5 days later. Then I got a letter 3 days after i accepted my offer!
@acme
Accepted 1/9
Still no packet in snail mail
Maybe I live a bit far? (Taiwan)
But I already received the packet from Ohio State(also accepted 1/9)so I thought there won’t be one
@Thewaiting4ever There is no downside to entering DUS. The Entry To Major requirements are exactly the same as someone who was “accepted” into Engineering as a pre-major. Congrats!!
@jlhpsu Thank you. Extreme Hypothetical question…one kid DUS, one kid pre major Engineering. They take the exact same classes and get the exact same grades… there is one spot left in the Aerospace program - who would get it?? I know its an extreme example but I have to believe (although everyone is telling me differently) that there has to be some additional advantage to being excepted under a major ---- why would anyone apply to a difficult major and not get in vs. going DUS? We will need to make sure we have good information on this to help make a decision. PSU is my son’s top choice but all the other programs he was accepted to was specifically for Aerospace (U of Maryland, Florida Tech, Auburn, Tulane and still waiting to hear from a few more). We are thrilled he was accepted- I just want to make sure we fully understand. Thanks for your help!
