PSU Class of 2020 Decision Thread

@jihpsu Just out of curiousity, why do you think most students at UP are in state? Is it because OOS people find the school too expensive or is it because the admissions people favor in state people more? I’m OOS myself.

@philly1600 question about U of Maryland. Did they provide any financial incentives? My son is accepted as well and trying to figure out if they “offer” any $$

@Thewaiting4ever , Thank you, when we do get through to admissions we get different answers depending on who we talk to , thank you!

Parents, If you haven’t seen a physical therapist for back therapy, you will soon. In-state tuition for junior and above is $19,600/two semesters, $16,600 for freshman, sophomore. Ouch! Temple University also has two tiered in-state-tuition schedule. Tuition for undergraduate Fox Business school is $18,600, while that of arts and science is $16,000 roughly. Break your back working or rob the bank.

@PennsyDad As quoted by admissions director at PSU in admissions presentation. And in dozens of articles such as this one. http://collegeparents.org/2010/11/27/when-your-college-student-changes-majors/
I say little without either first hand experience or research based data. But the numbers do vary…however I quote the 80% figure because it was what was said at a PSU admissions presentation on DUS. The point I am trying to make is that many if not most of the kids going into PSU now will in fact change their major. So it’s ok if they go in DUS.Just trying to offer some reassurances about DUS. That is all.

@DragonFire16 I don’t know really. I’m sure they like when people pay the full boat tuition as OOS. And I am sure OOS tuition coupled with low merit aid scares a lot of people away. According to their common data set, this past admissions cycle was the first (in the ones I reviewed that were available) that acknowledged that “location” mattered in decisions. But it didn’t specify which way was more beneficial…in state or OOS. So, I don’t know really.

@jlhpsu Thank you. I wish they would clarify whether OOS or in state is beneficial. I would imagine OOS is more beneficial for them since they get more money from those people.

Has anyone not heard yet??

On 1/22 We asked for reconsideration for DUS Summer (after acceptance to Altoona for College of Engineering, Computer Engineering) and they send we would here in about 2 weeks. Nothing yet.

@jlhpsu. I was not looking to call you out, that number just surprises me quite a bit. From my personal experience when I was in college I would have guessed that number to be closer to 25 percent. Mostly Engineering majors who thought they were engineering majors coming out of high school only to learn that perhaps the were not…after taking a couple of college math and chemistry classes. I guess if they count moving from an undeclared or DUS “major” to another major I could possibly see it…with as many kids that choose or are funneled to undeclared majors to start. To me; that would be declaring a major, not switching majors…but I guess it is all semantics at that point.
If the comment was strictly based on a comment from someone in PSU Admissions; it would hold little water with me…since if you asked a different person there (or the same person on a different day) it seems you would be just as likely to hear 30 or 95 percent. I guess it all depends on the definition you choose.
Thanks for the response and I do agree that there is little need for apprehension in starting out in DUS.

@Thewaiting4ever Not really sure, It is a much better school than any other one I got into so I will just end up taking out student loans in adittion to whatever aid I get.

I remember someone said most of the decisions would be sent out on Friday, is it true for all the students? How about the International students?

When being reconsidered does your application go back to “under review” or does it not change?

Just another data point @PennsyDad along with @jhpsu observations:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/04/education/edlife/choosing-one-college-major-out-of-hundreds.html?_r=0

We figured DS was committed to Chem E after surviving Honors Organic Chem as a first semester freshman; he ended up enjoying it, although there is no emoji to adequately depict the stress of that semester. Then, after taking some great Stat/Math courses, he started toying with Actuarial. Really a process.

Ultimately, we found apprising him that our participation (i.e. cash flow) ends in four years greatly encouraged his decision-making.

@kaybel - when my son called adm to request to be reconsidered, the next day or so it went from the Congratulations your accepted to Altoona, to being updated, then back to under review… and the profile was modified to reflect the changes in major etc that we set for reconsideration.

General Comments: I also applied to Schreyer, but I’m not sure if I’ll get in.

It’s 9:37 pm Friday and my application is still under review…

I was hoping that I can get a decision by today, but it’s still “under review”

Today I called and asked to be reevaluated for undecided starting summer at UP. They told me I wasnt eligble(or something like that) to be reevaluated for any semester starting at UP and that I would just have to stick with the 2+2 plan. Is that normal? I mean I figured I’d still have a low chance of getting into UP even after being reevaluated, but I didn’t think they wouldn’t even give me the chance.

@blueandwhite98 Yes, I’m sorry. That’s normal. As I told you earlier, psychology (what you originally applied for) and DUS have similar entry requirements. So if you were denied psych, summer, at UP, you would not be accepted DUS, summer, at UP. They aren’t going to put you through the reevaluation process, and take away from what they are doing to get other applicants first decisions out the door, when you don’t have the requirements to get in to UP. Many people call and are denied re-evaluation. The ones who are given the chance for reevaluation are those who originally applied to a highly competitive area - such as engineering or smeal - and exceed the requirements for DUS admission. But psychology is in the college of liberal arts. Which is the same competitiveness at DUS.

Something like 60% + of students that graduate from UP started in the 2+2 plan. It can work really well for many people.

When I’m calling to ask for reconsideration what exactly should I be saying? And is there a certain time I should call that would be most convient and person I should ask for? Any tips please
