Publix Supermarket Bakery Would Not Allow "Magna Cum Laude" to Be Written on Graduation Cake

Is it common to attach Latin honors to high school degrees?

Maybe they thought laude was how you spell “loudly?”

If they still wanted the cake, they could have asked for it to be written it in English instead-- highest honors (the article title says summa cum laude, not magna).

He also graduated last in his class (of 1), in the bottom half, the goat, the least likely to succeed… this kid has a lot of issues to overcome and now this cake fiasco.

A local woman recently bitterly complained that a local political columnist was harming her son because her son is a registered voter and the columnist–who tends towards satire–said that he sometimes signs letters with her son’s name. She thinks people will think the letters were written by her son.

Her son’s name is Jonathan Swift.

=))

@CTmom2018 I realized that after the edit period had ended. Not relevant to the point though.

The lesson here is to get your cakes at Costco where they don’t cost $70.

Well, he might be taking classes through an online program, or something. I gather that the superlative relates to his GPA, not rank (In most schools, I think the titles often have to do with discrete GPA, not ranking position. And I also agree that I don’t connect them with HS, though maybe private HS’s use them.)

Be that as it may, we don’t have Publix in our area, but whenever I see “Publix”, to me that name looks like something that could be censored!

Our public high school had Summa, Magna, and cum Laude designations. Summa was the top 20, Magna some percentage of the next highest, and cum Laude a good hunk of the rest of the top 1/3 of the class.

Yeah. It nearly shut down the boarding school forums. >:)

Wouldn’t such a filter also make it more difficult to abbreviate Bachelor of Science?

Now Publix is under the gun for supporting a far right candidate. Lots of bad publicity

I thought Publix was employee owned?

Publix gave over $650,000 to governor candidate, Adam Putnam. To avoid become nag political, read his bio. His ads all frequent in FL. I don’t know how the employees feel about this donation.

No, Publix is family owned by a very conservative family. They are great to their employees and offer a lot of benefits, including tuition, but they are conservative.

Also true.

I love Publix. We have one in my neighborhood and it’s our go-to store. Best grocery chain of anywhere I’ve lived.

Stephen Colbert just posted a picture on FB in which he is holding a tray of cupcakes with the censored word on them. :))

You haven’t lived where there are Wegmans?

Colbert just talked about this on his show and is sending the grad the above mentioned tray of cupcakes decorated with the censored word.
