Puerto Rico?

I know that you are not concerned about birth defects, but accoring to the latest news, Zika virus was found to cause MS-like neurological effect in adults… So… Mosquito repellent! PR is one of the Zika- affected places.

^^Jeez. I’ve also heard it can cause guillain barre, and we know someone who went through that. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

Zika is bad but what about guns? The recent massacre in Brussels was awful, but we manage that in gun shootings every week. That’s a sobering thought.

^^Well if we’re going to go there, how about cars? Cars kill way more people worldwide than guns or Zika.

@MotherOfDragons Ah, yes, the “cars kill more people than guns” argument. They have cars in the UK and Japan and yet they still have a much lower murder rate. And you don’t usually have someone drive their car into a school and kill 20+ people.

Perhaps you’ve discovered a new form of warfare. We can dropped cars on our enemies!

The thing about Zika is that it’s new to the Western Hemisphere this year. It will probably infect a huge proportion of the population in tropical areas of the Americas in the next year or so, and after that the number of cases will drop because many people will have become immune. And when this happens, fewer mosquitoes will be carrying it.

So a case could be made for rethinking your vacation plans and scheduling a trip to Puerto Rico for, say, two years from now, while going somewhere else this year, especially if there are any women who might become pregnant or male sex partners of women who might become pregnant in your group.

Yes, it would be awful to be worrying about whether you may infect a female of childbearing age as a consequence of your vacation–it would prey on my mind and not allow me to enjoy my vacation as much as I’d like. I know that MOST people don’t get Zika and most don’t have terrible side effects, but SOME do, and our family has more than its share of health issues already and I’d prefer not to add to them. :frowning:
