Flying is free for us but I get what you are saying.
So the kidās going to add in the āIām not privileged I just get a freebieā into the elevator pitch? I cannot honestly see any way in which this would be interpreted as anything other than privileged, pushy or both (and have that note possibly added to the file). In any case, as noted above itās almost certainly not going to get past the student or receptionist at the front desk.
Ok. Iām not going to turn this into a tit for tat typical internet banality of arguing. Just looking for opinions from people who are close to admissions or have been close to admissions of any university.
The world is littered with people saying you canātā¦
Getting past the kids at a desk or catching the attention of the right person isnāt the question. The question is does it make a difference in the eyes of an admin officer. It may be a question that is not answerable.
It might make a difference, but not in the way youāre hoping for.
To be honest, this sounds like yield protection (or possibly high financial need?) I know YP isnāt super prevalent at Purdue, but those stats are stronger than other OOS admits to ME including mine. Submit LOCI with demonstrated strong (and Purdue specific) interest if still considering them to overcome their concern.
D26, got in FYE
ACT 35 (36 math)
17 AP (4/5), currently taking linear algebra,
3.97/4.6
Oos
Yep, I get it. Admissions is a weird animal to me which is why Iām reaching out. Seems more putting together numbers than anything else
Anyone have a good recommendation for help with letters of continued interest
Has your kid visited Purdue yet? If not, that might help. Other than that I would follow the directions from Purdue regarding Loci, other materials they need, updates, and any additional materials Purdue might accept, as momofboiler suggested.
For the LOCI I would have your kid wrote why they want Purdue and how they will engage there and become part of the community. Thereās no gaming a LOCI. It should be authentic, in your kidās voice.
Yep, we went last spring. Unfortunately, nothing has really changed for her. She will send in grades which are all As and hasnāt changed. 3 APs and college dual enrollment courses.
Spoke with someone who said to write a letter that explains why she fits with the school. Which she already did in the first set of essays. We are a bit confused what another letter/essay will do at this point. Might have to take a week or so to reevaluate and find a pro who could guide her in writing a letter.
She got into a few amazing reach schools and figured Purdue was a target/safety. It suddenly appears it was the one she really wanted which she never expressed until the deferral letter came out. I would like her to go to one of the other schools but itās not my decision and the heart wants what the heart wants so to speak.
I recommended to S26 to not fall in love with any specific Univ unless one is doing ED. Have a top 3. The waitlist game sometimes goes on until Jun/Jul (especially UCs), many reject better options as they think they decided by Apr 2.
PS: My S23 transferred in junior year to his dream school, where he would love to do grad school too. He played the long game.
You said the magic words: āPurdueā and āsafety.ā Your student and everyone on your end who looked at the app may have been blind to something that gave off that vibe that Purdue was a sure thing. The letter of continued interest needs to leave no doubt that Purdue is the top choice. Instead of showing up at admissions to plead a case, the one thing you could do that is totally privileged is explicitly say in the letter if admitted will attend. You can finesse the message that you are full pay. If youāre not, obviously donāt say this because the only thing worse than getting denied your ādreamā school is getting in and not being able to afford to go.
get Rachel Toorās book Write Your Way In. Itās about the personal essay, but the tips can help on the letter. It will stand out from the AI slop because it will be a letter only she could write.
Thank you.
She will get in. She defers a lot but accepts them
Write a really strong LOCI, since Purdue does consider demonstrated interest, and that might have been the reason for the deferral (although I feel like college admissions is just a crapshoot, so who knows). Your kidsā stats are similar to mine, who was admitted, but we did fly out to Purdue and visit during Junior Year, and the visit experience was mentioned in my kidās supplemental essays.
@momofboiler1 Since you seem to have a lot of Purdue knowledge, by chance, do you have insight into the timing of Honors College acceptance? My kid was admitted to FYE at WL with the Presidential Scholarship (the merit award was mentioned in the acceptance letter, but nothing was mentioned about the Honors College). We are OOS. I am seeing a lot of people admitted to Honors College in acceptance letters, but I had previously heard that Honors notifications come out in February. Just wondering if my kid didnāt hear about Honors in acceptance letters, if that means they werenāt admitted, or if there is still another round of potential Honors acceptances in February? Trying to set expectations with my kid in terms of whether itās a definite no or if there is still a chance.
Honors notifications are different than when my daughter applied. Back then all honors college acceptances were a few weeks after acceptances.
Now, everything on the Honors College webpages say notifications will go out by the end of February. I read that as there is still a chance. If your student wants to know for sure, have them reach out to JMHC Recruitment and Admissions Team at honorscollege@purdue.edu or 765-494-6758
To manage expectations thoughā¦historically students receive merit or honors, not typically both.
For all students reading this that are not in honors but want a living learning community, check out the list of communities: Learning Communities - LC Profiles
Thanks. We visited last spring and had a sit down with an officer at Daniels. Went so well he went to lunch with us. Another reason we are surprised. Had a pro look over the app and is going to guide how to write a good letter.
I want her to go to UVA but unfortunately itās not my decision.
Thank you so much for the very helpful info and insights.
