Purdue OOS vs San Jose St

UC’s will only accept applications from transfers who have completed specific courses. You apply during your second year.
For OOS or private universities, he’s apply in the Spring of Freshman or Sophomore year. If applying in the Spring of freshman year, his HS record would be heavily weighted, with 1st semester college being more of a confirmation. If applying Spring of Sophomore year, HS record would have less or no import, however he’d have to have an exceptional record as a sophomore, both academically and in terms of leadership/impact, to have a shot at top universities.

It might be better to take a gap year & reapply as a freshman if merit aid is important.

(Expect to be full pay if you apply as a transfer, either to private or OOS publics)

what are his stats?
what’s he hoping for?

He is not into Engineering but is looking into law or business. He is 3.0 GPA. Finance is not a major problem but a consideration, since he will be going to grad school too. We want him to get some experience living independently. Purdue is a good school but if he is not doing engineering than not sure if it is a good idea to go OOS hence SanJose State.

Lots of universities are still accepting applications to Fall, due to Covid19 disrupting everything including admissions. I suppose you’ve deposited somewhere, but why not try and send a few applications through CommonApp to universities that may be affordable and better for him that SJSU (perhaps AACSB accredited universities that have smaller classes for instance?)

How do we find out which universities are still accepting applications?

NACAC list. There’s a thread on this website listing the best ones still offering financial aid. The Nacac website includes an email to the person in charge, who can be contacted to know whether they still have space and financial aid.
