Purdue University: Class of 2024 Discussion/Decision Thread

@Cincyboilerflyer we’re interested in hearing more about FYE bands & orchestra LLC. Any positives or negatives you don’t mind sharing? Do students stay in beyond 1st year?

I have been active. Great Page!

Just an FYI for those parents who students will matriculate to Purdue - the parent FB group will continue, just eventually without the university staff. If I recall, the staff stayed on with the group until just before Fall classes started. Then volunteer moderators took over. There usually are parents with older students to answer lingering questions and lots of good information sharing.

Anyone got in? regular

@BookishSort

The band and orchestra LC had maybe 40 students in it. The LC students participated in a variety of bands and orchestras ( mostly with non-LC students of all ages) first semester. My son was in a concert band and my son’s roommate was in an orchestra. The music ensembles met 2X a week. In addition, first semester the 40 LC students met for a 1 credit class that focused a lot on career prep.

Second semester, Lc students can tryout for a different music ensemble if desired. My son switched instruments (to bass guitar) and auditioned for a jazz ensemble. I don’t think there is another Lc class second semester.

Why join this Lc? 1. Dorm placement 2. Fun way to meet non-engineers through music. 3. Priority scheduling for second semester. 4. Opportunity to participate in pep bands ( only students who play in a Purdue music ensemble can try out for pep bands).

We will be at the March 2 PFM event. Son, Engineering.
We wanted to go after we knew that Honors information would be out.
Also had to work around sports schedules.

We are going on March 23. Does anybody know what they will show in Polytechnic on a PFM Day? We have an email into Purdue as well.

We will go on March 2 too and also will go to February 29th event. Son also was admitted to FYE and didn’t visit before.

Anyone know when financial aid will be announced?

just join this site couple days ago. I know many of your kids had already been accepted. My son did regular. Base on what you already saw, could you please give me some idea if he has a chance?

@jingchih Purdue fills the majority of their class in EA so it’s super hard to predict admission in RD. All the best to your son!

Your son’s gpa and SAT scores are closed to my S. My S applied EA and was accepted to FYE. Your S has a very good chance to be admitted. Keep fingers crossed.

Yeah, it appears by other replies that overcrowding is an issue… However it does appear that the acceptance rate for the engineering programs are lower than the general admit rate.

For those students who have been accepted and are looking for ways to finance their education here is an option Purdue offers. I don’t know the details but it does look like an interesting alternative to loans.

does anyone know when purdue’s honors college decisions will come out?

@dreamybear, probably this Friday, if last year’s timeline holds.

Late to this thread - my son was accepted at Purdue with a Presidential scholarship:
OOS
Major: Actuarial Science
GPA: 4.0
ACT 35/SAT 1470
cross country/track and orchestra
National Merit Semi-finalist (hopefully a finalist)
We are visiting again at next week’s Purdue’s For Me. He only applied at 2 schools - Purdue and Florida State. The Benacquisto (full ride) at FSU is looking very attractive to him, especially because college is his cost to figure out. Purdue might have a slightly better actuarial program, but he is confident he can get a job graduating from either school.

In case you aren’t part of the FB parents page, here’s a post from the Honors College. Guessing this means decisions are imminent. Hope this doesn’t become a reprise of the merit discussions!

Hi Everyone! Mindy from the Honors College here again. I wanted to let you know we are close to having our Honors College admission decisions released. Students will receive an Admit, Waitlist or Deny decision. As you and your child wait patiently to find out, please keep in mind the following things:

  1. You have some really accomplished and great kids! We thoroughly enjoy getting to know them through their applications!
  2. There were over 8200 applicants for 725 spots across all majors and academic colleges.
  3. The Honors College is an interdisciplinary community. We want students from all different majors to interact with each other.
  4. Heavy weight is placed upon how students answered their Honors College application questions when being considered from admission. That being said…
  5. There will be students with really high test scores and lots of activities who are not admitted to the Honors College. So yes, that means that your child may receive admission but another child from their same high school may not.
  6. around 2/3 of the FYE students who applied, will not receive admission to the Honors College.
  7. 3/4 of the Science students who applied will not receive admission to the Honors College.
  8. If your child is not admitted for Fall of 2020, they can reapply after their first semester.
  9. We will not answer questions about specific students decisions in this forum or via facebook messenger. Please email the addresses provided in the decision notification.
  10. If your child is placed on the waitlist, please proceed as if they are NOT admitted to the Honors College. Fill out the housing contract, sign up for STAR, etc. If we are able to move students from the waitlist, it will not be until after the May 1st acceptance deadline and we will make all the magic happen behind the scenes to transfer over all proper Honors College bits.
  11. If admitted, we do ask that freshmen live in an Honors Residential Community if you plan to live in University Residences. You still need to fill out a valid housing contract by May 5th in order to be placed in Honors housing. We have singles, doubles, triples, and quads available, so please rank your choices accordingly.

Thanks for reading the long post… but trust me, this just saved us 1000 email or facebook replies ! Hang in there parents, you’ve done a great job with your children!

Has anyone got mail about Honors ?

I just got an email with acceptance to honors college!
