that is how much you are expected to pay.

what the ****? that makes no sense cuz i am going to state school where i will be living at home (a UC school right next to my house) and its around 17000 for everything. so FAFSA wont pay for ANYTHING???

You’ll be expected to contribute at least $24,599 from the family. You’ll likely end up paying more, if you go to a pricey college, as most colleges won’t cover all need, and most aid packages will include loans and work study.

it means you will have to pay $24,599 before receiving any aid. Also – with such a high EFC, that aid may very well be in the form of loans.

sorry – i didn’t read the other posts. basically it is telling you that you will be paying full price for the school. unless you qualify for merit scholarships?

baklava,

I strongly agree with scarlet.
Your opening statement says your parents have incurred a lot of debt that the FAFSA doesn’t take into account. While it would be nice if people’s mistakes could simply be ignored, the fact that they incurred that debt is going to hurt you. I don’t know how your family lives, but an EFC of 80k indicates your income is fairly high with a low number of dependencies. The fact that your family is in debt tells me that you probably lived beyond your means. That’s unfortunate, but in complete fairness, you get what you pay for and you pay for what you do.
Unfortunately, in this case it is your parents’ actions that are influencing your future. It happens and I empathize with you but I have little sympathy, I am sorry.
Money does not simply grow on trees. The $Billions you speak of are needed for various projects at universities. They don’t simply go right into scholarships because universities need more money than they bring in through tuition.
As far as stealth-bombers and so forth, those come from an entirely different part of the government’s budget and is entirely unrelated. I would suggest taking some classes in business and economics before you pose arguments like that!

As far as my own EFC goes, I’m just going to leave to I will be paying full tuition. I have 2 siblings, 1 of which will be in college either here or abroad in Germany next year and the other is at a private school. My dad has a steady source of work, but his source of income is sometimes impeded by insurance companies who refuse to pay him (meaning he does work for free at times).
Still, I see no reason we should be getting assistance from the government beyond loans if and when they become necessary. (At this point, I am doing my best to get scholarships, internships, and work to pay off the bills along with the preset amount of money my parents are contributing–I consider this an important lesson in budgeting for myself!)
My personal feeling about financial aid is that the majority should come from merit because that encourages people to work harder in HS as well as encouraging parents to push their children, but capitalism willl always force us to help the poor financially so that they have a better chance at success.
Finally, I see the issue with paying for college as a way of learning. The reality is that most of us waste HUGE portions of our time AND money!
Get a job (or 2!) and work hard to pay off college–and go somewhere inexpensive. I know that in Colorado (where I am from) the MOST EXPENSIVE state university is $15k/yr and you can go to college for as little as $7k/yr (rm and brd included) at a 4 yr full-time. At a community college (the first 2 yrs), it would cost as little as $1-2k/yr there. In California, it’s even cheaper with some community colleges charging as little as $20/unit! Working full-time, my lifeguard job in HS would have paid $16k/yr! That tells me you can certainly do it if you really have to; it’s just that most college students would rather ride right through on our parents’ (and the gov’t’s) pocketbook!

My parents are ecstatic with my EFC. it is $50. It is so wierd, before my parents wanted me to go to the cheapest school possible. With financial aid like this, they want me to go to the best college possible. it woulld be cheaper for me to go to an IVY than to UGA because Ivies meet all financial need (not that I am going to get into an IVY).

does anyone have a higher efc than me??? 24500$. so pretty much the fafsa application was a waste of time for me to do cuz i wont get ANY MONEY. i am ****ed right now.

my efc is 99999, so yeah, it was a waste of time for me too.

^no way???!!!. how much do ur parents make?

well, my mom is a stay at home mom, so my dad makes a substantial amount…

more than $120,000?

much more than $120,000…

Nice lucky you :)

not lucky in terms of college expenses

Well your parents will shoulder it, so you have nothing to worry 'bout.

yeah, but my parents have only agreed to shoulder $20,000, which means that i have to get some massive scholarships, or go to a state school.

My EFC is 29 bucks. My family had a adjusted gross income of 6120 for 2004 ;o

11,700…solidly rooted in the middle class

EFC $2600, but the first financial aid package we have received left a $10,000 gap.
