Question about ACA Penalty for Adult Son Moving Abroad

@mom60, I hadn’t thought about the preexisting condition situation. I’m sure you’re right. Cool about your SIL! I’ve heard of several friends of friends who have gone to AUB. It really is a small world.

@intparent, wow. What a mess this all is. Creating a situation where someone has to lie just to keep medical insurance!

Thanks to all of you for your responses. It’s been very helpful. It looks like we should continue to pay for our son’s coverage over here, plus medical/evacuation insurance.

His hematologist would really like him to take recombinant Factor VIIa with him to Lebanon, but that would be around $20,000. Not happening!

We bought monthly " bridge coverage" for S, to cover from when his U student policy ended in Aug until he again qualified to be covered by H’s family policy on 1/1 the following year (after ACA kicked in). I just didn’t want any gaps in coverage–insurer got to keep all the premiums and S deferred services until he was back on the family plan.

Best of luck to your S, @MaineLonghorn! Great that he has some contacts there already. That must be reassuring. Your young man sounds terrific!
