No, I’m not affiliated with the school, but I have gone through and am still going through these steps as a GMS Scholar. Always happy to share tips. There isn’t a set list of approved items, but through revision requests you’re able to fund some pretty neat opportunities. GMS covers funding for study abroad programs during the academic year (excluding summer term), so it’s a great thing to take advantage of. As for the laptop, you can absolutely choose your laptop; however, some schools do have a funding limit on how much they will increase your budget for laptops so you’d have to find one that does not exceed that limit (if there is one). For example, the University of Washington allows up to $2,200 for a laptop. These are budget estimates though so you might find a laptop that costs more or less than the limit. When you actually go through the revision process, they’ll ask for documentation to show the costs of the laptop. Hope that makes sense.
