Question from newbie

Also, someone suggested I post these question in the Parent Forum rather than the Cafe, so I think I’ll do that too! Thanks!!

If your daughter retakes the SAT or SAT2 later, colleges will see all previous scores. However, they will only consider the highest scores your daughter receives.

Have your daughter take a practice test (there are books available, or can try online at the college board website). If she doesn’t feel comfortable with the material, it is possible to change which subject test she takes on the test day.

About SAT 2 testing. Should she take the Math 2 test now or wait until next year when she finishes AP CalcAB?

Thanks.

SAT2 tests only through pre-calc, so it does not really matter whether she takes it now or waits until next year. What she should do is to spread out her testing so that she is not stressed.

I’d suggest she take the Math 2 this June since she’s just had the course and because it gives her more breathing room next spring. Fitting in the SAT reasoning, 2-3 subject tests and AP exams along with year end activities can get pretty crazy.

I agree with taking the SAT II math at the end of PreCalc, while it is fresh in her mind. At her level of sophistication she is studying different types of math, which don’t build on old material like reading and writing do. This leaves us with the paradoxical situation that in the SAT I math section the most talented kids are the ones furthest away in terms of study. The SAT I goes only into a little Algebra II, therefore your daughter is at least a year away from everything on the SAT I math section. Scoring high on this section is not about being knowlegable but about not making any mistakes. This is where taking the practice tests you can buy in the bookstore are very helpful rather than studying for the test. With your daughter’s skills it’s really a matter of rehearsal.

Students’ Guide to Colleges.
Gives you an objective look “from inside”.
