Quick and easy dorm "care package" ideas

also just placed order with alice.com~what a perfect idea for college students, ordered laundry detergent, cold medicine, toiletries, snacks and with no shipping fee. although not the funnest care package I think the surprise factor, (coupled with the mom factor) will go over well…

I just sent my s this package [FREE 6 COOKIES plus SHIPPING - CherylAndCompany](Try Me Thank You Cookie Card) as a happy finals gift!

linz, or anyone else who has tried alice dot com, how has this site worked out? Also, opinions on netgrocer now that some of you have used them? Thanks.

Well I wouldn’t call it quick and easy but having an empty nest means no baking, which I love to do. I’d eat it all, which cannot happen. SO…baked for D 1 today - 2 chocolate cakes and 2 loaves of pumpkin bread…plus packed in a large container of Fluff for the cake and also a container of prepared frosting…oh, and fudge. She is in an apartment with 4 others so it will be shared and devoured. I love the aspects of cooking and baking…I find that I am baking and bringing it to work and my coworkers are saying “enough”! I did not find much on alice.com that my D’s would eat.

I’ve sent both home-made and mail-order care packages, and I’ve gotta admit that my kids seem to prefer the mail-order ones :frowning: . Just this week one of my kids needed an emergency pick-me-up and I ordered the student care package from Stew Leonard: [Student Care Package](http://www.stewleonardsgifts.com/item_detail.cfm?ItemNmbr=606) . Wow - I had the most gratifying response ever - apparently their granola is really good. It was on the expensive side ($50 plus shipping), but I was too swamped to send something from home and the package contained a ton of good stuff (weighed 9 pounds-plus; I’ve spent more on 2 or 3 pounds of stuff from Harry and David).

I did have a home-made care package success once, when I enclosed an inflated mylar balloon at the top of the box and it floated out when the thing was opened - kid’s friends were impressed.

Wishing I lived near a Stew Leonard’s and could shop there all the time …

So glad you’ve revived this thread. While paying bills today, I tossed the offer from DS’s U. to send their finals package because I’ve “been there done that” last semester. Sent one from Cheryl & Co. last year with tepid results. I will definitely check out Stew Leonard’s offer. Thanks for the suggestion.

northeastmom – my son has placed orders at alice dot com twice and was very happy with it. He received his packages 2 days after ordering, but his school is in the midwest, so it’s close to the distribution center. It’s really a godsend for him as it’s difficult to get to a store, and this allows him an easy and economical way to get his necessities – kleenex, toothpaste, shampoo, contact solution, etc. They sell some of these things on campus, but it’s MUCH cheaper through alice. We highly recommend it!

blackeyedsusan, thank you. It seems like a good site, but I wanted feedback from a cc poster.

I live right by Stew Food (as we locals call it!)
Well, for the non-food type care package, I just got the Archie McPHee catalog yesterday. I think I’ll send pickle band-aids and brain mints for finals week. They have the silliest stuff. D will be so stressed out - she won’t want to eat and will definitely want a laugh!!
They even have an inflatable turkey (beach ball type) for those kids not home for Thanksgiving!!

Thanks for introducing me to Archie McPhee. Awesome!

Oh my gosh! I LOVE the site! Affirmation Ball? Emergency Yodel Button?

What fun!

It is even more fun to stop by their brick-and-mortar store on the way home :)

Really BunsenBurner?? I am soooo jealous. I got a librarian friend of mine the Librarian Posable Action Figure years ago - what a scream!

Has anyone ever shopped at a site called from mom dot com? <a href=“from-mom.com - This website is for sale! - from mom Resources and Information.”>from-mom.com - This website is for sale! - from mom Resources and Information.; I like that they’ll let you build your own care package.

I posted earlier about using netgrocer with success. Last week I used Staples.com. I sent two cases of water, a case of apple juice, rice krispie treats and other snacks, and some lysol disinfecting wipes (dd’s roommate has been sick). These items were listed on the staples website under “food and breakroom supplies”. They had various snacks, etc.

It was free shipping for a $50 order.
She got the items two days later!

katie, thank you for the Staples idea! I would have never have thought about ordering from them for a care package, since I have never ordered online from them at all. My DH has, but he does not think about “care packages” (that is in my job description, lol).

Bumping this thread. Great links and tips!

I love Amazon Prime. I often send S a case of his favorite drink, carton of his favorite snacks, a book I think he would like, toiletries with no shipping charges. Because shipping is free I don’t mind ordering a just a paperback or some other small treat. And he loves getting the packages.
