so fun to read your report! how nice of you to come back and share. Sounds like a great use of your three days!

Driving in the District actually isn’t as bad as driving in some other cities (Philadelphia, are you listening?). I’m not a particularly good driver, but I have driven in DC many times, and it doesn’t especially scare me. However, parking in DC is a nightmare. Parking garages are expensive and never seem to be located where you want them, and parking on the street (if you’re lucky enough to find a space) is hazardous to your car’s health.

My daughter lives in an apartment building in DC. She does not have (or need) a car, but many of the other tenants have them. One time, when walking through her apartment building’s parking lot, I noticed that every car I passed had damage to the corners of the bumpers. Scrapes, dents, bits of paint that obviously came from other cars. This happens because the parallel parking spaces in the District are absurdly small, and you can’t get in and out of them without damaging both your car and the cars in front of you and behind you.

When we moved S2 from his dorm to his apartment in DC, we took the side streets in Georgetown to avoid the congested main streets. Those side streets are so narrow. I was glad DH was driving because I probably would’ve exchanged paint with any of the cars passing us in the opposite direction. S2 doesn’t have a car & does just fine using public transportation.

What is the neighborhood like around Howard University? My daughter is going to a concert at the Howard Theater in a few weeks. I see on Orbitz that there’s a Holiday Inn Express and a Quality Inn within walking distance, but if the streets are sketchy I’ll tell her to drive the few blocks.

read the reviews at trip advisor dot com to find something. also kayak dot com puts up neighborhoods within the district for your ease after you do the first step on the left so you can choose neighborhoods that are closer so I would do kayak first and then trip advisor for detailed personal comments. you should be making this decision based on metro station near the theater and blocks she has to walk. She could stay lots of places and catch a metro to near Howard

Is it a safe neighborhood?
