This really sucks that because of sending in the “late deposit”, I’ll be stuck with a pricier dorm. This makes me really ****ed off because I’m STILL waiting to hear about my appealed financial aid from another school and that would have really made my decision either way, but NO they won’t make a decision until 4/30. Are they friggen kidding me?! I’m definitely sending in my enrollment deposit to Carnegie tomorrow but I’m really upset that I won’t be able to get one of the cheaper housing options as that’s what I was banking on. I honestly don’t have a preference given the dorms but I just want a normal priced one (ie. the ones they allotted in the budget or cheaper) but it doesn’t appear those are still available. =(

On a side note, how exactly do I send in the deposit online? Detailed instructions please because I just quickly glanced at the “now that I’m admitted page” and it said :

Fall 2010 Enrollment Reply Form

To accept our offer of admission, all admitted candidates, including financial aid awardees, must send a check or money order for $800 along with the Enrollment Reply form, postmarked on or before May 1, 2010. This deposit will be credited to your account and is non-refundable or transferable. Please complete this form, sign and return it with your check, money order or MASTERCARD/VISA payment form made payable to Carnegie Mellon University. PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH.

So I’m assuming I’m looking at the wrong link?

I feel horrible for placing this burden on my parents even though they saved the money for me to go to college :(

No, no! The budget is priced at a standard double, not a quad. There are plenty of standard doubles, don’t worry. Those won’t run out anytime soon. You won’t be forced into expensive housing.

The COA in the financial aid package is based on a standard double $ 6270 for next year which is found in Morewood, Donner and some of the Hill Housing.
As Kate notes- there are plenty of these-- more of these than any other room type on campus-- but if you leave your deposit the last day-- you will very likely be in Oakland apts.
There is one standard double that is a different price- -that’s Stever…it is a new dorm with A/C…read the blog on admissions by A. Revack - very helpful!

The price of prime double is about $600 more than the standard double --at $ 6900
You get a prime double in Mudge, Henderson and some Hill dorms.

The price of a prime quad is about 700 less than the standard double at $ 5560
So taking a Mudge Double costs you a bit more than a Donner or Morewood Double
And taking a Mudge Quad costs you a bit less and it is the least expensive option is the most rare (only 32 spots) on campus.
Stever is also 6640.

The housing page can show you how many spots are in each dorm, virtual tours and floor plans.

There are about 75-100 freshman placed in Oakland apartments – basically those who could not decide until the last minute–(those posting a deposit on the last night of April into May 1) and the waitlisted students are placed there== since they didn’t get their deposit in until everyone else. These rooms are about $7200 - $7400 - they are nice, and you are NOT required to take an expensive meal plan. They are FRESHMAN only, there’s an RA and you get an apartment. You’re not in an isolated situation -you are with Freshman and totally involved in orientation and the fun of CMU.

It is reasonably to assume with only 4-5 days left until deposit deadline, that at least 3/4 of the class have posted a deposit and that Mudge and Morewood being more popular-- those spaces will fill-- but you never know…this could be the year that Donnor is most popular or the Hill. It is certain though- mudge primes will already be taken by EDs. PLENTY OF STANDARD DOUBLES still left.
It’s the last day deposit crowd that pretty much ends up in Oakland…and some people choose an apartment b/c of all the advantages it offers!

Probably the more important thing to have on everyone’s mind the next two weeks are the AP exams-- … that influences course selection …Good Luck!

I sent in my deposit the last week of April and got a triple.
My friend sent in a deposit the day before they were due and got a prime quad.
So it’s definitely possible to get Mudge regular decision.

Even if you don’t get Mudge, it’s not really a big deal. I personally like Stever as well. And some of my friends love being in the Oakland apartments.

At least CMU is not experiencing the housing shortage as UCLA. The freshmen dorms have three people per dual room. Now that’s added stress for a first year student.
