Rinsing something that is denser than water will not get rid of sand, which also sinks to the bottom. I would switch to a different brand!

I think it might be possible to use quinoa as a gluten-free, healthy crust for quiches. I do this with cooked brown rice - mix with an egg, press into bottom and sides of a pie pan, add filling, bake. The rice sort of melts into the filling, so you can’t tell it’s rice, it just makes a sort of firmer shell so that the quiche holds its shape. It should be possible to do this with quinoa as well.

So many great ideas … maybe I can convince my quinoa-phobic DH that it’s really couscous? :)

Re: crust- rice is starchy which helps it bind together. Quinoa will need something to bind it. Think Alton Brown and food science. Something science-y is behind the need to chill some patties/crusts. If you don’t mind the whole thing crumbling when you slice to serve, I think a crust is pretty intriguing. You can put the Q into something like a quiche or stew, too. Or soup. I used to “hide” all sorts of things in concoctions.

Good point, lookingforward! Would the egg be enough to bind it?

I buy my quinoa at Costco. I don’t rinse nor is it sandy or bitter.

This uses Q flour, I suppose we could do that with a food processor-? (Must be some DIy instructions, somewhere.) http://allrecipes.com/recipe/quinoa-crust-quiche/ And this looks pretty <a href=“Broccoli and Cheddar Quiche with Quinoa Crust - NOURISH Network”>http://nourishnetwork.com/2014/03/21/broccoli-cheddar-quiche-quinoa-crust/

Yes you can make it, but ideally you need to toast it in a pan first, then process in food processor after it cools down.

You can buy it at Whole Foods, though, too.

These recipes sound really good. Since FDIL is a vegetarian, I’m always looking for new dishes that she can eat as a main course. These recipes fit the bill.

Gee whiz! Everytime I sign on to cc, I notice many people’s screen pictures are different! Some seem to change daily, lol. :)

Our cousin is a vegan and at Thanksgiving, she made Quinoa patties with sweet potato chunks, cranberries, scallions, I think, and maybe raisins too. If she’s vegan, she probably didn’t use an egg to bind it together, but they were fabulous! I’ll either ask her for the recipe, or maybe go on line and see if I find something similar to share here.

This one I just found on line sounds similar. I know she included cranberries too. (Maybe the sweet potato and cranberries for the Thanksgiving theme!)

^ ooh, did you catch the other Q recipes at the bottom of the page?
And something about how healthy Q is http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=142

We cook with quinoa several times a week. Have never had bitter quinoa but I always rinse. You need to get a strainer with very tiny holes! We also always use chicken or vegetable broth to cook the quinoa in. We like enchilada quinoa. I make it with cooked quinoa, black beans, corn and sometimes sauteed onions. Add enchilada sauce and a few triangles of Laughing Cow queso or garlic and herb cheese. May also add browned ground meat or turkey if you want meat. Place in casserole dish and sprinkle shredded cheese on top. Bake until cheese melts. Can also change this and use spaghetti sauce and mushrooms/green peppers and ricotta cheese for a quinoa lasagna.

Here are some other favorites we make:

We also make quinoa stuffed peppers

I made the recipe mentioned in post #13 tonight. It was a hit with everyone. Thanks, ignatius! On the same page was a picture of parmesan zucchini spears and I made also them. We added a salad and had a great meatless meal.

NorthMinn, I’m coming to your house! :)

This is a good cranberry and cilantro quinoa salad. I first made it when it was posted in a thread on CC.
