I think Rice and many of the other LAC suggestions made on this board would be a good fit. Like Brown University, almost every student at Rice has a “quirky” side. It is also quite an intellectual place with no frats/sororities; instead, we have a residential college system (think Harry Potter houses; instead of the 4 houses, we have 11). Rice tends to lean slightly towards science/engineering, but there are plently of humanities/social sciences/architecture/music students here as well. Rice is quite selective though.

Although you need to do your own research on these schools, I do not believe Duke or Emory are quirky or intellectual. I visited Duke and Emory this past April, talked with students there, and read student reviews on these schools (good website: uni go.com), and I did not get that vibe about either of those schools. Of course, both schools are quite selective and offer an excellent education, just like Rice.

Other schools that fit your criteria that are not necessarily in the South: Brown University (Ivy and very selective), Pomona, Middlebury, UChicago, Davidson, Reed (definitely quite quirky), and Swarthmore, plus many of the other LACs.
